She had been on Etimon for only four days, but it felt like a lifetime. At first, it was all glamour and parties and attention that she had been sorely needing. Now, as she stood alone in her closet, looking at all the expensive clothing, she was second-guessing her decision. It had been a long four days, filled with experiences she had never thought possible, but it felt empty.
The door opened and in walked Dahr, looking as polished and pompous as always. "Ah," he said after just one look at her. "I told you that you would get lonely if you stayed here."
"I know," she admitted. "I just didn't feel like going out."
"The more you are seen, the more your lifestyle will improve," he coached her. "I know you miss your shipmates, but have they even tried to contact you?"
Her fingers caressed the fur collar of a beautiful, long coat. "No," she sighed.
"There," he nodded. "It is one thing to be nice to someone because they work with you, it is something else entirely to stay in contact when apart. It shows who your friends really are...or lack thereof." He paused and walked closer to her. "What of this Cliff I met? He seemed protective of you."
"Nothing." That was what hurt the most. Though he had given her his blessing to pursue the opportunity on Etimon, he had not tried to contact her ever since. "Maybe the Talon is away."
Dahr made a sound at the back of his throat. "They were docked for a couple of days just two days after you arrived," he said gently. "He had plenty of time." His slow approach finally arrived him at her side and his hand found hers. "Come with me to the party. Forget about the past. Your future is here. Patrons are already asking for you. Come meet them."
"All right," Hudson said. "Give me time to change."
"The red satin one," Dahr suggested. His hand ran through the very ends of her hair. "You removed the dye," he said. "It might hurt sales."
She looked at him in defiance. "If they don't like me as I am-"
"Of course," he backpedaled. "It's lovely. I'll wait outside."
As the door closed, Hudson fell to her knees, clutching the red dress to her body. The color reminded her of Cliff's personal choice of wine. "Where are you," she whispered.
