A muffled squark sounded from the beak of a flamboyantly coloured bird, it’s feathers mostly scarlet red with a dash of deep green along each individual tip. The edges of its short but fairly large wings were a shocking yellow. It was a strikingly beautiful bird but not quite so in comparison of the light blue sky that looked like it was glowing alongside the army of soft clouds that dominated over the landscape. It was a good day, at least for the bird as it flew through the air, it’s long thin tail drooping slightly to brush against the tops of the forest trees. In it’s beak was a large acorn that was worthy of bragging, if only it could do so.
Its flapping slowed as it leaned back to gracefully land on a large long branch that emanated from one of the tallest trees around. Hopping along the bark it reached the side of the trunk and began tapping the acorn against the hard surface, hoping to break it’s snack. Tap tap tap, the acorn didn’t seem to want to break. Suddenly there was a rustle of the lushful green leaves that populated the tree. The sound surprised the bird as it made one last crack at breaking the acorn that promptly fell from its grip. The acorn fell, bouncing through and off the leaves and branches respectively before hitting an unlikely victim.
“Ow!” Robin yelled out in surprise, the shock and need to rub his head almost misdirecting his grip on the branch above him. The pilot looked up at the cobweb of green, bark and the glimmer of bright sky blue, hoping to spot his attacker. There was an almost angry sounding squark before a rustling and a flash of red sped away from the leaves high above.
Robin frowned before allowing himself to smile and then shake his head, sometimes he wondered if nature and not just technology was against him. He looked down past his feet, he couldn’t even see the ground around the tree’s base with all the levels of bark and green he had pushed past to get up here. What would happen if the branch under his feet suddenly gave away? He pushed the nonsensical thought aside, if it happened then at least the new medical staff aboard the Talon would get some practise.
He wasn’t here to be a daredevil but simply enjoy the sights, breathe in the fresh and real air that the planet had to offer. The last time he had been on a planet was back on Salor, his whole body and mind shuddered in remembrance of that despicable place. Loosening his tightened grip, Robin reminded himself not to think of dark and deep caverns of rock and water. He felt his stomach tense slightly as if awaiting a punch. Shaking his head forcefully, Robin began climbing once more.
After some time he reached one of the major branches that was almost like a normal tree trunk itself, it could have actually been a sideways tree for all he knew. He wasn’t exactly big on knowing a lot about this planet but he did know that there was a great lack of dangerous creatures. That didn’t stop Robin from bringing a knife that was secure along his belt in a leather sheath. He had also brought phaser that sat comfortably in his backpack, just in case. A weapon was an equally useful tool in the right situations and he hoped that he wouldn’t end up in such a scenario today.
Of course if things did go sour, he always had his combadge to call back to the Talon or the station, a quick getaway if needed though he severely doubted his need for it. The only possible threat was someone else that just happened to be in the area with a big attitude problem and a mighty mean right hook. He didn’t think he would come across anyone, it was a rather remote area for one thing except for a small village some ways away.
Robin carefully began to lay down onto the branch, making sure to lock his feet under the tree’s bulk as he rested his chin across the tops of his hands to observe the landscape. This wasn’t the first time he had been on Etimon’s surface and he couldn’t ever imagine visiting an area where it wasn’t breathtakingly beautiful. It was a sea of green that seemed to glow under the warm sun, the soft wind brushing through the land to make it look even more like a sparkling ocean, winking and inviting him to enjoy and explore the wonders it treasured.
The pilot tilted his head slightly, it wasn’t all green. His eyes traversed an outline without the tall trees across a small area. It was an open area but what it contained, he wasn’t sure. He thought he saw a hint of white, almost as if there was a cloud right there. Robin looked away from the area searching for a hint of something else and there he saw flashes of colour that mimicked the sky.
A river...
Robin smiled before sitting up and preparing to get off the branch though he paused after remembering something. Freeing his arms from the backpack’s straps, he gripped it tightly and placed it in front of him. Opening the bag he began to dig around before he pulled out a holoimager.
Looping a hand under a small strap on the top of the bag he leveled the camera with his eye, seeing the world through another lens. He thumbed the control and with a click, the image captured the land though unfortunately not quite it’s life. It was good enough, he thought. His mind would remember the breeze against his cheek and the roughness of bark under his fingertips. It always seemed different and yet the same on every planet.
It was as if everything was from the same place, he just wished that everyone appreciated the same beautiful things, the universe would be a hell of a safer and better place. But that would make things too easy and what made up the ticking of time was never easy. Stuffing the imager back into his bag and securing it back around his spine, he began to make his descent into adventure.
