Oliver beamed with satisfaction as he watched his room mate making his way over with the beautiful brunette on his arm. Or was he on her arm? It was impossible to say, as they looked more like two opposite magnets rather than a magnet and filing. Drunk Oliver was proud of that analogy. He wondered whether there was a market out there for scientifically inspired poetry. He'd always been pretty good with creative projects in language arts classes. He certainly read enough to be a decent writer. Spelling and grammar had always been the things that killed him.
Mrs. Collins was the best language arts teacher he'd ever had, and she'd told him that he had promise as a writer, because all great writers were dreamers and avid readers, and there was never a moment when Oliver wasn't daydreaming through class or stealing stealthy glances at a book he'd hidden in his lap. Mr. Collins, however, had been Oliver's economics teacher and that hadn't been a positive experience. Where his wife was a paragon of patience, Mr. Collins had once given an entire class zeros on a midterm because one student had handed in his paper a moment late. It was strange how some people could attract.
"Oliver, this is Lauren, my girlfriend,"
That was unexpected but not unbelievable. Etilen would have a beautiful girlfriend wandering around the cosmos. "Oh! It's so nice to meet you!" Oliver said, excitedly introducing himself to the woman for the second time that evening. "Are you stationed here?" Drunk Oliver was so enthusiastic about making small talk that one of his excited hands upset a drink that someone had been carrying and he found himself apologising profusely to a burly moustachioed man. Miraculously, the man didn't seem bothered but gave Oliver an understanding smile and disappeared into the crowd before Oliver could offer to reimburse him for the drink.
