"I can't make promises about what will ultimately, but helping us can only work in your favor."
That was little comfort to Shahn, who decided she needed to remain silent from this point forward.
"With all due respect, Governor, it will be a cold day in Hell before I ever let you play dress up with me."
"Everyone has their own version of Hell," Tazer said. "Some think it is cold."
"You're doing the right thing. You're giving your niece and nephew a mother... and you're showing Ahska that she's not alone. She may have lost Etheron... but she does have you."
Shahn hardly noticed the smell coming from the ship as she considered the words of the officer. There was no way Ahska would forgive her for what she had done.
"It's time, Shahn."
Taking a deep breath, Shahn entered the ship and sat down in the first chair she found.
Tazer hurried in, placed the kids in Shahn's arms, and rummaged around in a closet, then held a silver mini-dress out to Braddock. "Take it or leave it," he said as he tossed it to her. Turning, he slipped into his chair, noticing briefly that the air smelled slightly like violets. He squinted at Myrlaa, but decided he didn't want to know. "It'll be a short ride," he said. "But hang on."
The Phoenix rose from its position on the planet and skimmed across the burgundy landscape. Retanya rose up quickly on the horizon and soon they were landing in the small airfield near the compound. "Everyone out," he said. "Follow me." He lead the way into the compound, ignoring the eyes of various Etimonions they passed. Finally, he saw the brilliant hair of the Hezak. "We have a lot to discuss," he said to her. He walked past her and into the office he knew so well. Here had been the negotiations with Etheron, the hours and hours of discussions, and here was where he had last seen the older ruler.
He pointed to Shahn and sat down. "I believe your aide should start."
Shahn looked down at the bundles she was holding. Tears ran down her face. "They are yours," she said to her sister.
"Tell her," Tazer urged.
With a shaking voice, Shahn began her confession.
