"I can try digging, if you like, but it's probably quicker if you do it. I'm sure you'd like to clock off at some point today."
She had spirit, though he couldn't imagine her lasting long digging in this heat. "You direct, I'll dig," he smiled down at her.
“I do hope you are drinking plenty of fluids, Mr. Kale.”
"I-"
“In this kind of heat, and with you doing such strenuous manual labor, your need to keep yourself hydrated is very important."
"I kno-"
"That and taking frequent breaks."
"If-"
"I do hope you've been doing both of those things.”
"We-"
“I'm under Captain's orders to scan everyone for anomalies. Let me start with you, Mr. Kale.”
Kale gave Georgia a bemused expression, then spread his huge arms wide. "Go for it," he said to Luis. He waited while Luis performed the exam, then Kale shook his head and walked back to Georgia's side once the all clear had been given.
Dakbar watched it all in silence, taking in the large man's interest in Georgia.
“Find anything interesting?”
Though the question had been addressed to Kale, Dakbar replied immediately after Georgia's noncommittal answer. "We have just finished initial scans. Digging will hopefully show us more."
Kale glanced at him. "We?"
Dakbar shrugged.
"Here's good."
Nodding, Kale plunged the blade of the shovel deep into the earth and began hauling large amounts of dirt at a rapid pace. Partway through the dig, he stopped, handed Georgia the shovel, walked past Luis, and picked up a bottle of water. Drinking it until it was empty, he tossed the empty bottle to the doctor, then picked up another and doused himself with the contents. Without a word, he returned to his work and resumed digging.
It took some time, but he finally uncovered yet another body, and then a third hand in the hole. Pursuing it, he uncovered another body.
"Hold it," Dakbar said. He knelt down by the hole. "These are not posed in a ritual burial of any kind. It's as if the earth covered them where they died." He glanced up at Kale. "Proceed. I will document their positions as you uncover them further."
"Sir," Kale said before leaning into the work once again, widening the hole as he went. Body after body was exposed. Many of them had traumatic injuries to the bones and one of them was missing an entire leg.
Kale fell into the sort of trance that occurs when undergoing a strenuous job for an extended period of time, but it was broken with the next discovery. "This one is closer to the surface," he said. In fact, it was just barely covered by the soil. As he exposed it, it was apparent that the bones were a brighter white than the others he had already found. In fact, the skeleton was lying on top of one of the dingier ones.
"Whoa," he shouted, his eyes opened wide. "You've got to see this."
Dakbar stepped over and looked down at the discovery. The skull's empty eye sockets stared up at him, but he was focused on the structural V shape just above the bridge of the nose.
