Grace paused a moment as Doctor Ericson mentioned the medical lab. Had she overlooked something? A slight hint of anxiety began to swell within. Clearly, she had been more preoccupied with whatever had been going on with Lieutenant Dakbar than she had originally anticipated. After all, it wasn't exactly commonplace for Grace to overlook anything. Part of her was actually starting to wonder if she was in trouble.
"Just keep up the good work," Sig said as he poured himself another cup of coffee. "Do you know that this can kill an Andorian?"
His comment about her keeping up the good work gave Grace a moment's pause. Perhaps things weren't as bad as she believed. Still, she made a mental note to be more attentive in the future. And she'd have to do her best to avoid being distracted. As he made the quip about the coffee, Grace smiled a bit. "Perhaps we should consider decaf... or better yet... tea," she suggested. Though, it was certainly a suggestion she was hoping he'd take her up on.
"I wonder if..." He shook his head. "Nevermind. Not important."
Grace's brow furrowed slightly with a hint of curiosity. "What is it, sir?" she asked quizzically as she took a single step forward.
Turning, he looked at her innocent face. "Sit down," he said. "Care to tell me why you were summoned to the Brig by the Security Chief?"
Grace knew this was a conversation that was going to be had eventually. It wasn't as if the Senior staff didn't share notes. After all, they met... frequently. Surely, one department head was going to tell another that they'd questioned a member of their staff. Grace couldn't help but feel that her short, stellar career in Starfleet was on the verge of burning out. She slowly lowered herself into the vacant seat as Doctor Ericson had asked her to do. After a few seconds, her eyes lifted to meet his.
"He had some questions about myself and Lieutenant Dakbar," Grace answered. "Um... specifically an incident between myself and the Lieutenant that took place recently on the holodeck." Grace shrugged. "It's the only thing I could tell him about Lieutenant Dakbar. It's the only interaction I've had with him." Grace sighed softly. "Commander Griffon seems confident that the Lieutenant is acting as a spy, but...."
Grace's voice trailed off. She shook her head dismissively. "I'm sorry, sir," she apologized to Sig. "I shouldn't be second-guessing someone with Commander Griffon's expertise. Besides, what do I know? I'm a nurse... a first-year nurse, not a polygraph." Grace may have believed that there was more to Dakbar's story, but perhaps her own naivety was clouding her judgement.
Grace was actually grateful that when Doctor Diego rapped at Sig's door. It seemed he wanted to the captain of the alien vessel to come aboard so that he could be examined. As exciting as a prospect as that was, Grace didn't think it was exactly common practice to ask a guest a board to submit to a medical examination... especially the commander of a vessel. She waited patiently as the doctors concluded their talk and Doctor Ericson proceeded to compose a message to the Captain.
In the meantime, Grace reviewed her findings from the crime scene once more. Whatever may have happened, the evidence didn't appear to have been manipulated, and it still seemed to suggest that Lieutenant Kayden's injuries had been self-inflicted. Pressing the screen of her PADD a few times, she proceeded to run another scan for any additional toxins that may have been in Kayden's system. She didn't think she'd find anything, but it was best to be thorough. Once that screen was completed, she'd be able to upload her findings for the Security team to review, assuming nothing else showed up.
"Sir?" Grace asked hoping that she wasn't pushing her luck, "Is it okay to ask how the Lieutenant is?" Grace paused a moment before explaining herself. "It's just... when I last saw him, he... didn't seem himself. Distant... a little vacant, clearly stressed... his wrists were injured...." Grace shrugged. "I would have updated his medical files myself, but... Commander Griffon was very clear that I was to avoid all contact with Lieutenant Dakbar." Grace swallowed. "Plus, I think I'm also barred from Deck 18."
