“I am so, so sorry!”
Sorry for what? He was confused for a full second until he had some inkling as to why she was apologising. Poon stains were incredibly insignificant when compared to the most recent developments. He wanted to ease her mind but she kept going. When told of Aevo's death she looked just as sullen and angry as the rest of them had when he had been shot. She was young but she also understood the man's importance unlike that guard.
As he approached the bed and sat down besides Xeira he noticed the slight quake of her form, was she cold? Was it because she was still ill? He was concerned and had half a mind to go and grab Nila but then Xeira started talking again. He listened closely, allowing her to say what she needed.
“Physically I’m fine,”
He wasn't so sure about that considering what he had just observed.
“This is my first away team mission, and… I thought I’d be prepared for anything that could come up.”
There it was. Youth. The feeling that you could take on the whole damn universe, ready for anything. He understood how that felt, like many others but to have a first away mission go like this? He was reminded of Grace and how her first mission had ended up with her running for her life with killer Klingons on her tail. It was harsh and unfair considering just how boring people's first away missions really were. He nodded in understanding.
“I wasn’t prepared for any of this. Fearing that food could kill me…"
It was a reasonable fear because it could happen and besides, they were all to blame for not really checking the food beforehand. It was an issue he should have made known.
"I have a symbiont now and I have a responsibility to Eli to try and give him the best chance at life possible."
Oh, Robin thought to himself. That changed a lot of things and it was no wonder the woman had been shaking earlier. Responsibility was an incredibly daunting thing, no matter what you were responsible for. Sometimes looking out for yourself was hard enough.
“I… I’m sorry sir, I’m just a little shaken up right now.”
Robin offered a warm smile and was about to place a hand on her shoulder but stopped upon realising that it was his blood stained palm. He turned slightly and reached out with his right arm instead to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. It was somewhat awkward but hopefully she would take the sentiment all the same.
"It's okay, you have every reason to be." Robin said to her before retracting his hand and looking away to the wall as he debated on what else he could say. He didn't know much about Trills, not really, just the general stuff everyone knew. What was it like to be responsible for another life? Actually, that was rather easy. It was just like being a superior officer, or a parent to a child or an older sibling, even a friend...
"Is Eli young?" He asked looking back at the ensign, if she was then that made it seem like Xeira was indeed caring for a child. Xeira was young, she shouldn't be burdened with that kind of responsibility so soon, not in his opinion. She needed to live some of her life before giving up on some of it for someone else.
"We do crazy things when we're young but often, we have someone by our side to make sure we're okay or to share in the embarrassing suffering..." He paused to reflect on what Xeira had said earlier about giving a best chance of life to Eli.
"It's okay to take risks from time to time, that's how we learn, have fun and have a fulfilled life." He paused again as he considered his own risks, as well as the ones he had not taken. The ones he may very well regret.
Robin smiled, "Just make sure you have a third friend with you both."
He remembered her words about this being her first away mission and he hoped that he could alleviate some pressure there as well, "If it makes you feel any better, I didn't expect any of this either. Many times today I wasn't sure what to do... sometimes you just have to," He shrugged.
"Go for it."
