"Sir, would you mind taking the flank?"
Jonathan was about to do just that when the request sounded from Roman. "Not at all," He responded with a smile as he took those steps to fall into the flanked position. He glanced down at the footprints. They weren't old, otherwise the desert would have made sure to cover them up unless this place had no wind and no storms. He would have to ask Zaynah but it seemed that she had her own curiosity to sate.
"Sir, If the Romulans worked so hard to cover all traces inside of the ship..."
Jon opened his mouth but it was too late, Zaynah had already separated herself from his side, opting to take an unnecessary route around a rock to keep pace with him. What if someone had been waiting behind that rock? He quickened his steps just a little, craning his head to see the flash of green that was Zaynah's skin. He relaxed a little.
"Why weren't they so careful with their tracks?"
It was a good question and one that invited integral discussion.
"What, if they want to be found? If they want to be found, its most likely a trap right Commander Roman?"
"Not necessarily, consider us in their position. If the natives were friendly, we would want to be found, helped and saved." He looked back at Zaynah, "Hiding what belongs to you is not a crime. If one of our consoles was stuck on a page that just happened to show the locations of Earth's protection grids, we would probably destroy it, just in case."
"But," Jon looked to the rest of the away team. "The fact that the desert hasn't washed away these prints yet means that someone had made the trip recently. It is suspicious and we should act accordingly." Jon's eyes rested on Roman to see if he had anything to add. The fact in the matter was that they were currently facing a lot of unknowns and the fact that they were dealing with Romulans made it all the more ambiguous.
Jon glanced at Zaynah, "Ensign... the next time we pass a rock, don't separate from the group please." His eyes were firm but he gave her a small smile, to let him her know he wasn't mad. He knew from prior experience that she could be a bit sensitive... but then that had been a burst of flame on her dinner so perhaps that was a bit different.
"Considering the situation, we need to make sure we have vision of each other at all times."
