"The family is not so large anymore."
That was something that many Bajorans could relate to all too well, and Leria’s brown furrowed sympathetically. She knew about the rebuilding of Cardassia, and how even some Bajorans had decided to go to the various Cardassian worlds and aid them in recovery.
"They would not be so haphazard,"
Leria shrugged. She wasn’t too certain how the red-tape of Starfleet bureaucracy worked, nor did she want to. She had enough trouble just dealing with the little corner of Sickbay that was hers, and she was more than content to let others handle the more complicated matters.
"You shun your parents?"
“Shun?” Leria asked. It wasn’t like all of that; rather, when one had parents that somehow were constantly hovering, always disapproving…
"And, if you think Desan has nothing to do with your deployment here, you are a fool."
Leria tried to gather what remained of her patience, which was rather thin after her long shift. "I believe that I haven't articulated myself properly," she said. "I haven't shunned my parents. They've shunned me, because they don't think that I'm good enough." Unexpectedly, she felt an emotional response that was wholly abnormal for her, and she frowned. How was it that even at her age, after having attended Starfleet Academy and Medical School, that she still resented the preference that had gone to her other siblings. Desan, the genius, accepted to the Academy at 16 years, and fast tracked through the system by his abilities and connections. Javan and Rychel, both brilliant Engineers, both whose work had greatly aided Starfleet R&D, who had certainly benefited from Desan's interference, but who would have succeeded either way.
"All I do is save lives, you know. And it took me until I was 29 to start."
