"Well, sometimes being on the front lines, best place to be for action."
Perhaps that had been what it was all about. Being on the front lines. Being among the first to step foot on planets and learning about the Gamma Quadrant and all it had to offer first hand. First Contact was one thing, and while she was amazed at learning about the biology and culture of new worlds, the diplomacy that went hand in hand with it was usually boring. Or at the very least, it tended to be someone else's area of expertise. But to see their way of life, the climate of those worlds, the food, the people... flora and fauna... that was where her heart lay. Holographic simulations didn't do the real thing justice. It was a bonafide fact that no two worlds were alike, and each one deserved to be adored for its individuality. That was hard to do from a space station half a galaxy away.
For years, she was at Deep Space K-7, and being forwarded assignments from all over the galaxy. Follow-up research to what the pioneers had already begun. Even though she had a few of her own original projects, she was always receiving projects from afar requesting further testing and investigating. It was like... someone constantly spoiling the end of a book for you over and over, and yet, you still needed to finish it for the sake of an assignment. The mystery and thrill were gone before it even began. It was almost as if she'd wasted those years of her life.
Yet, as her thoughts went to David, she knew that that time wasn't a waste. Honestly, it was anything but a waste. And yet, here she was... half a galaxy away from home... from him. Yolanda took a deep breath. She hated to think of it in terms of choosing between her career and her son. Of course there were quite a few people that held on to such a simplistic point of view where that issue was concerned.
"What got you so interested in science, may I ask?"
Yolanda smiled at the question. "I've always been interested in science," said Yolanda. The smile on her face grew immensely. "I brought everything home as a little girl. Rocks, flowers, animals... I think I even brought home mud once or twice." Yolanda quickly recalled the scolding her mother gave her on those occasions. "I could never stand not knowing. You can imagine my not being very happy when that curiosity began to include biology." Yolanda shook her head. "So, I decided to venture into Starfleet. See the universe... have the chance to answer every question imaginable. If you can't do that here... where can you?"
She then looked back at Carlos. "What about you?" she inquired. "When did you know that you wanted to be a soldier? One could argue that you could have just as easily pursued a career in local law enforcement. What drew you into wanting to become a MACO?"
