Bruce was happily enjoying what seemed like an alien version of an ice lolly, only more fruity and delicious. He wasn't sure if it was Etimonian or not because the last time he had spotted such a thing was back during the carnival here on Etimon a little while ago. It had been hosted by an alien species named the Shydrans.
Interestingly enough, the Shydrans were actually back in town, only not in full-force like before, and from what he heard, this time was more like a mini-carnival. It was because of that that Bruce had elected to take a trip to the planet once more.
Continuing his licking of the fruit lolly, Bruce approached the main city square and he supposed he shouldn't be surprised to see this was where the event was happening. Just what did the Shydrans have on show this time? He saw a large banner in the distance, alien words written along the top side and underneath was English, 'The Gamma Water Challenge!'.
Bruce raised an eyebrow, did that mean the water was gamma radiated? Or was it simply called that because of the starbase, or the fact that they were in the Gamma quadrant? He was aware that the species were a nomadic group that enjoyed sharing their love of challenges and athletic ability. Most often they were the ones showing off but from how that banner sounded, it looked like they were challenging the local populace.
And speaking of the people, there was a relatively small crowd, mostly made up of Etimonians and humans surrounding the 'challenge' area, including what seemed to a large structure. The top of it seemed to be a platform of some kind and what was also noticeable was the huge stream of water splashing off the side. He needed to get a closer look.
Moving his way through the crowd Bruce looked puzzled at what he saw, "Um, what is this?" He asked the person next to him.
"It's like a mini water park, you have to get through all three challenges." The man said as he pointed towards the first obstacle. It was a raised platform near ground level filled with a large number of holes, varying in size. Bruce also noticed several tubes on either side of the platform pointing at each other.
"Those holes are like geysers, water pumps. They shoot up and from the side in random intervals and you have to reach the other side to complete it." The man said.
"That doesn't sound too bad," Bruce said with a lick of his lolly.
The man laughed, "It's harder than it looks, the pressure of the water can be strong enough to knock you off your feet, there's a time limit so you have to be quick." He gestured towards the tubes on the sides. "Those things are annoying as well, they shoot water balloon things at you, some small, some huge."
Bruce frowned, okay, not so easy... but still, he was fairly confident he could get through that first stage. "And the second?" The engineer asked.
The helpful observer pointed to the large structure. It was essentially a huge slide, the only difference was that water was rushing down the slide as if it was a rapid.
"You have to climb all the way up that thing, there's ropes but that's not going to help you much. They're not like regular ropes, organic or something, hard to keep a good grip and on top of that strong current, you have to deal with those water balloons again!"
"Ouch," Bruce muttered to himself, that one could take a while. "What about the third one?"
This time the man shrugged, "No clue, no one has completed the second challenge yet... I'm not even sure there is a third challenge to be honest, I haven't seen any other things to warrant as another one."
That was pretty interesting and what Bruce found even more interesting, was how they were wasting so much water, where was it going? As an engineer he really wanted to see the system they had in place. There wasn't too much excess water overflowing onto the the actual ground square despite the amount they were using.
"You gonna go for it?" The man asked Bruce, "If you do, you can take off your clothes over there by the buckets. They usually wait to have 5 people for each round so you have time."
"Yup... but first I'm finishing this thing," Bruce said gesturing to his lolly.
The man scoffed, "It's called an Abb stick by the way... and if I were the Hezak, I would give you ownership of the planet if you could complete all the challenges whilst holding the Abb." He said to Bruce with a grin.
Bruce gave the man a look, "I don't want to waste it." He said as he stuck what was left of the abb stick into his mouth, his tongue swirling around as it slowly dissolved into fruity goodness.
"Iz zer a wrize?" He asked muffly.
Somehow, the man understood Bruce asking if there was a prize. "Dunno... if there is, I'm hoping it'll be a kiss from the Hezak, she's gorgeous."
Bruce nodded in agreement.
