Her boots crunched on the fragile sandstone that littered the entrance of the cave and she turned on her flashlight as she continued forward. Stetson probably regretted it the moment he briefed his assistant as to what had occurred on Etimon with the Romulans. As soon as she heard the name of the victim, she was instantly at attention and pushing him for details he didn't have. To his credit, he pulled some strings and arranged for her own visit to the site after receiving assurances that it had been thoroughly checked for traps and other dangers that Romulans were known to equip any place they occupied. She was completely certain that he disagreed with her insistence that she go alone, but she also knew he understood. While the SGE teams had gone over the evidence completely, she still needed to see the place for herself.
Having read the reports by Roman and the investigation team, she had a basic understanding of the cave's system and layout, but she was taking no chances. The device in her pocket was recording her direction and sending it real-time to the ship, just in case. What she really wanted to do was interrogate Lav'aura, but that wasn't going to happen. Grumbling under her breath about Starfleet Intelligence, she wandered deeper into the cave, following in the careful footprints of those who had come before her. Though the case was closed, she didn't want to disturb any evidence.
Blood. There was a lot of dried blood, especially in one of the smaller 'rooms'. Tricorder in hand, Kinin moved through the caverns to the main gathering area for the Romulans according to the reports. She stood in the halo of her flashlight for a moment, imagining them milling about, plotting, coming up with ways of torture that would get what they needed. Scowling, she clenched her jaw. How Roman had managed not to kill every last one of them was a testament to his strength. Kinin wasn't so sure she would have been so kind.
If the Romulans had been there for any length of time, they would've taken great pains to hide anything valuable, and it certainly wouldn't be where they normally congregated. Leaving the known cave system, she stepped out into the sunshine and began exploring the area beyond.
