“It’s actually quite thrilling. Plenty of adventures to go around. Crowded and more than a little stressful when you consider how far from “home” we are, but over-all…worth it.”
Spike tried thinking about what adventure you could have being stuck in one place. So where to actually explore, it's like being stuck on a starship however at least they were still moving and do explore. Not knowing what was out there was part of the adventure, he guessed never living on a starbase he would never truly know what that adventure would be.
“Actually, I did…once.I got into Starfleet Academy, and went through all the hoops for a semester. By the end, I realized how much I didn’t want to live a life in Starfleet, and how much of my initial desire had just been my father’s."
Spike showed little surprise at Aaron saying he went to Starfleet Academy. He did however give a nod to acknowledge what was said, "I joined starfleet on my own accord. I was part of the Talarian military beforehand. Only made sense in my mind. We train young, human and Talarian society is somewhat different." He spoke with no emotions, like recalling fact. It had been years since he last saw a Talarian, he guessed he was probably declared dead like his brothers, "Ironically I only ended up back with humans when my shuttle crashed into the Deneva Colony, my birthplace. Starfleet decided I was best with "my kind" so I started adjusting and starfleet seemed the best way." There was no hatred in his voice but it was obvious he thought about this a lot.
As Spike asked about Aaron's wife he could see how he spoke about her, with pride. He couldn't help but smile about it.
“As far as caring about her...Have you never had family member that you care about? Parents? Siblings? Cousins? Starfleet comrades? What would you do for the one’s you love most?"
Spike let out an uncomfortable breathe as Aaron asked the question, he would let him finish before he answered. At least then he could get his thoughts together.
“Hailey isn’t just a mate. She’s not just a wife. Ever since I met her, she has been my best friend. I share everything with her. And wherever I go, I plan to go there with her... All that is to say... Is that: yes, I care for her.”
Spike nodded his head again as he tried to think, comprehend what love actually was. He turned his face to Aaron, his eyes displaying some of the pain he felt. "My parents were pirates. They only cared about robbing people." He wasn't going to go into much detail about that, "I'm an only child. On the Talarian Colony I grew up with a lovely family, they encouraged me to push further and I always tried making them proud. We are a competitive species." He smiled as he remembered racing the other children along a river, being truly free in his mind.
"The closest I had to a crew before starfleet was the six of us sitting in a shuttle doing our training exercises." He turned away from Aaron, "That was the first time I crashed a shuttle and I watched my brother die. Since then I have tried to keep my distance of being so attached until Starfleet." He didn't want to drone on too long, he barely knew the man but in a sense he enjoyed letting his thoughts out of his head. After all he wasn't sure if he was ever going to this starbase again.
"Took me a few years and a discipline to get use to human culture again. I would do anything to protect a fellow officer, even flying into a suicide mission." His face seemed to light up a bit, "Even though I haven't felt love or truly, whole heartily cared for someone as you do, I have had flings to say the least." He turned back around to see where they were walking.
He felt a lot more at ease, maybe being on this starbase and socialising was not all that bad. He knew his new captain would know him very well due to his record. Even with the black mark they were happy to request him for their helmsman.
"Is this the place?" Spike asked as they arrived at the door. He was glad to see the yellow lights still flashing but sadly he knew if it was that this mission was over and he would have to find the Talon by himself. "If it is what would you like me to do?" He straightened his starfleet jumper and went back to his neutral face, back to his starfleet officer persona.
