With the station still at red alert, Siobhan had decided to extend her time in Engineering slightly in order to get things back together. The major problem had been as sorted as they could get it for now, although the problem could have been so much worse. She preferred not to imagine how, but she knew that everyone on board the station right now should be feeling very lucky right now. Lucky that they weren't particles of space dust floating around the planets upper atmosphere that is!
With most of the urgency from earlier lost, the working environment was certainly a lot easier, although she would be much happier when that too dropped to a more comfortable level. Then she could return to be off duty, as she was supposed to be, and pick Ricky up from the nursery. Assuming he had even returned their, as the nursery staff had likely taken the kids to the nearest shelter during the Red Alert. Had he been afraid? Crying for his mammy? It was times like this that Sio felt the most guilty about her choice to remain in Starfleet. She hadn't exactly chosen her posting, but she knew deep down that she should have requested an assignment on earth. The academy perhaps, but her perhaps selfish ambition had ensured that both had been moved to the Gamma Quadrant, of all places. It was a new frontier, and a dangerous one at that, and she couldn't be certain that she would be there to protect him. Just like today.
She could deal with that later though, perhaps even begrudgingly talk to a counselor or her chief, but for now she had a job to do. Not a very interesting one, but then it was certainly a lot safer here than it would down by the reactors! Not as much fun though.
As the reports came in clearing reactor after reactor, it seemed that my some miracle there had been no major damage. A team were down there now, while she had remained in engineering to assist in co ordinating the repair effort of the areas surrounding the explosion. She had been surprised to not be called onto the team, but because sh had a young son there were some that treated her as though she had forgotten to give birth! It couldn't be helped, she supposed, but then she was beginning to realise just how self centred she was being. Or was she?
What she was doing was allowing herself to become distracted, she chastised herself, before skimming through another update on the repairs. So far so good, she noted, as the sooner they were finished, the sooner she could get on with things. Including analysing her situation some more. Did she regret remaining in Starfleet? No, she loved every minute of it, especially when things were tough, but there in lay the problem.
