"Renard was pregnant."
Desan nodded, “Although the Lieutenant presented as though said child was conceived in the normal matter. He was a bit developmentally delayed, judging by Commander Ericson’s reports, and it is uncertain whether said delays were caused more by the lower tech level of the planet and lack of abundant resources or by the intemporality of his prenatal period.”
As a scientist, Yolanda was an observer, and Dr. Olser-Drew's query and Desan's response hadn't gone unnoticed. She had a theory in mind, but found herself distracted as she inquried Desan about the chain of command. Yet, what truly captured her attention was the look on Dakbar's face. Truly, if looks could kill.... Yolanda could only wonder what she had gotten herself into.
“Lieutenant Commander,” Desan said. Yolanda couldn't help but notice the emphasis that had been put on her rank, specifically the former portion of it. Emphasis and inflection... Yolanda was pretty certain that she had just posed a question that placed her squarely in the middle of a pissing contest. “This is a Starfleet Intelligence operation. It is not a five year cruise. There is no executive officer, and I assure you, this operation has been approved by the highest echelons of Starfleet Intelligence within the Quadrant.”
Evade... parry, and strike. Desan seemed to carry himself in a conversation as one would a duel. He would yield no higher ground, and in Yolanda's opinion had mistook her question as a challenge to his fitness for duty. She kept her eyes trained on Desan, but was confident that if she spared a glance in Dakbar's direction, he'd be enjoying this. “Your query, however, renders me curious why-- out of a list of information that includes espionage, wormholes and temporal anomalies-- that you focus on what you likely consider your perceived role of second highest ranking member of this team. If you do not accept this circumstance, you’re more than welcome to await Talon’s return from the station, but I must say, this mission offers you a chance to make discoveries within the Gamma Quadrant which would ensure your place in the history books.”
Yolanda exhaled slowly, and then laced her fingers together as she brought them to rest on top of the table. "With all do respect, Captain," said Yolanda, her own emotions may have gotten the better of her as she seemed to put a bit of emphasis on his rank as well, "I have no interest acting as executive officer in any capacity. I chose my career path a long time ago, and have yet to regret it. And as for the information you've presented... I would say there's a slight misconception on what I've focused on. I simply thought that'd be the easiest question to answer."
Yolanda took a deep breath. "I already have a few theories, but nothing I can without faithfully proceeding through the scientific process. In regards to Renard's child... I would hypothesize that the developmental delay is likely a side effect of the temporal instability of the area. I think the human ability to adapt is more formidable than many give credit for. Reliance on tech having that significant of an impact is... in my opinion, overrated. Doctor Osler-Drew may agree." Yolanda was hoping she hadn't put the man on the spot with that comment, but she quickly proceeded not wanting to land him on the hotseat she currently sat upon.
"The growing process is likely... confused," said Yolanda. "It was receiving two sets of instructions as to how the fetus should grow: at the rate of its environment or its genetics. Naturally, I can't be entirely certain on hypotheticals entirely, but, that is my theory. As fully grown adults, the Talon crew members were more resilient against the accelerated passage of time." Yolanda paused, as another thought came to mind. "Assuming that passage of time is constant." Another theory had begun to play in the woman's mind, but she continued on a different point.
"As for the wormhole, as you likely know they are almost never stable, especially when they're naturally occurring," said Yolanda. "However, to artificially do so is no easy feat. And to attempt it in the Badlands? It's like trying to harness exactly 15 watts of electricity from a lightning bolt in the midst of a thunderstorm... no more, no less." Yolanda continued to look in Kayden's direction. "Believe me, Captain... I'm willing and more than capable of carrying out the tasks for which I was requested, under the provided circumstances of course."
“Starfleet Intelligence has significant SIGINT facilities aboard Starbase Gamma Etimon, in addition to state-of-the-art decryption systems. The signal has a purity rating of 99.999875%.”
Yolanda simply nodded. She was starting to think their Captain was just a bit snobby. A simple 'yes' would have sufficed.
“I do,” Desan said, pressing a few commands into his console. He handed over a PADD. “The first set of readouts was taken by the vessel claiming to be the Tak’noret. That’s the vessel the missing team was in, and the readouts are taken from both sides. The second was taken this morning via long range sensors from the nearest Starfleet vessel to the Badlands. And the third is the most recent readouts on extreme long range in Sector 2. It takes about 24 hours to get there even via Star Stream, so we don’t have anything more recent, I fear.”
Yolanda's eyes moved over the PADD that she had been handed. She said nothing for a few seconds, but then moved her hand over the PADD as she made a few notations. She slowly lowered the PADD and then looked towards Desan as she waited for him to continue. She wanted to review those scans again, but considering that they had 24 hours before they arrived, she'd have plenty of time to sift through all this information and come up with more answers than questions.
