Raal's eyes moved towards the chronometer. After noting the time, his eyes swiveled around the Command Centre. He noted the absences of several of his officers and knew exactly where they were. In all honesty, he actually preferred his fate to their own. He was hoping to avoid the chore of the Halloween celebration at all costs. It was a Human tradition that had somehow gained his approval. Of course, putting the task largely in Commander Richards' hands was certainly one thing he didn't object to. As far as he was concerned, it was a project his first officer could claim all the responsibility for. Granted it was a needed boost to morale, but Raal was still hardly in a rush to join into the festivities. His mind was easily elsewhere a dozen times over.
He was glad to be back on duty, and for the most part had put the situation with Lyras behind him. Yet, while that personal situation was over, the investigation to Romulan, as well as Klingon activity, in the area was far from over. There was also the matter of the Academy that was currently being built on Etimon. Over the past few weeks, Raal found himself getting a lot of face time with the likes of Admiral Phillips, Hezak Ahska and President Beckett. Suffice it to say, a great deal of his attention was occupied by the Federation's latest venture recently.
He reached for the PADD that had been presented to him nearly an hour ago and sifted through it once again. Surely, there was something more to keep him occupied and here in the Command Centre. Most of his senior staff would be in attendance to this little gathering, if they were aboard that is. A few of his officers had been summoned away to attend a few conferences or projects where their expertise had been requested. It was certainly all official... if not rather coincidental.
Upon hearing a few orders being given behind him, Raal turned in his chair to find Lieutenant Braddock still on duty, ordering one of her subordinates to commence with a diagnostic. He waited until the young officer had left to complete the task before turning his attention on the Lieutenant. "You can look those results over later, Lieutenant," said Raal, "I believe you have somewhere to be." He could sense her reluctance to leave, especially after her attempt to busy herself with work to delay the inevitable had failed. He nodded in her direction as she acknowledged the unspoken order and took her leave.
Turning to face forward, Raal's eyes focused on the forward viewer. He could see business moving about as usual as ship after ship floated by and requests for docking and departure flowed steadily. He then pushed himself up from his seat. He had no sense of urgency to attend this gathering, and certainly wasn't planning on donning a costume. He shook his head at the thought. Humans and their strange customs. Towering over his chair and began to walk with his PADD still in hand towards his office. "Commander Myrlaa, you have command. Alert me if needed. I'll be in my office." He knew the Benzite's shift would be ending soon and that he was eager to attend the Halloween gathering.
"Yes, sir," said the Benzite. Only a few seconds before Raal heard the Benzite's voice continue. "Captain, I was hoping to get your opinion on my choice of cost--" It was probably in bad taste, but Raal had managed to escape into his office before the Benzite had called out to him. Luckily, the doors shut ending the impromptu conversation and sparing Raal the agony of having to reluctantly participate. Myrlaa was a good officer. Rather long-winded, but a good officer.
Raal moved into his chair and then turned his attention to his console as he reviewed some of the messages that had recently been sent to him. As he sat there, he took a deep breath and then called out. "Computer," he said waiting for the acknowledging chime. "A little background music for ambiance. Er... In the Mood." Raal continued to read as the tones softly began to fill the room. And unbeknownst to him, his finger seemed to find the timing of the tune as it lightly tapped along on his desk.
