Personality: Tek, as he is more known by, is one who is constantly led by a thirst for knowledge, and won’t stop to find the answer to a question, or a solution to a problem presented to him. Being one from two worlds, Tek finds himself in an internal struggle between the more secular and scientific Earth, and the religious Bajor, opting for a balance of following science under the faith of the Prophet. He holds his faith dear to him due to the history of his world.
When it comes to social etiquette, Tek can come off as defensive when questioned, and feels that sometimes he has to fight for his right to be here, despite how insane a notion that is. He can come to anger relatively quickly if questioned, though tries to keep himself completely subdued in front of his superiors. He carries a bias against the Cardassians due to the past he has been told about, despite the fact that he was born afterwards, mostly due to his upbringing.
Background and History: Tek was born the son of a Federation officer named Kenneth Tekison, and a former Bajoran Resistance fighter named Sarish Maren. The two were considered an odd couple, as both held strong wills, and neither were willingly to give up an argument. Ken was an ecologist who had obtained the rank of Commander, and had been an officer on a ship (he never told Tek which ship it was). Following the Federation's assistance to Bajor after the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor, and then again after the end of the Dominion War, he began studying Bajor's traumatized ecosystems and assisting in rebuilding the planet. Despite having family in North America on Earth, Ken fell in love with not only the planet, but with the hot-blooded woman who the Provisional Government assigned to help him.
Sarish Maren was one of the many freedom fighters born into a conquered and unforgiving world, where the wrong turn got one killed or worse. She learned about pre-occupied Bajor, and it resonated with her how wrong the Occupation was. Following the execution of her family for aiding rebel fighter, Sarish vanished from her birthplace in Kendra Province, and joined the fighters in Dahkur. She had been a prominent fighter, someone who could be counted on to find their way through trails less traveled, and acted as a scout for many of the attacks on the Cardassians. She found killing those "monsters" to be almost an art form, and allowed herself to grow with as much hate for them as possible. To this day she explodes at the mention of Cardassia or its people.
Due to the confusion of naming between humans and Bajorans, when the two bound themselves to each other under traditional Bajoran manners, the two kept their names as is, while noting that while on Earth, she would be known as Maren Tekison. For that, among other reasons, the family rarely left Bajoran space, opting to stay planet side or on the adjacent planets for their work. When Tek was born, he was given his father's surname, but named in the Bajoran manner: Tekison Nevir.
Being known as Tek in school (because he wanted a more Bajoran sounding surname), he grew up learning about Bajoran history, which during the time of his primary education was heavily anti-Cardassian, and barely gave credit to the Federation. While his mother approved of it, his father was concerned about what the Provisional government was doing, and insisted on Tek learning about Federation history as well, due to Bajor's entrance into the Federation. While this additional education helped round him as an individual, the damage was done when it came to the Cardassians, and he became vile and unforgiving of the Cardassians, and welcomed the severance of their alliance with the Federation.
When he became of age, he was offered a chance to pick a life goal. Trying to decide between staying on Bajor and embracing that heritage, or going to Earth for Starfleet, Tek went to the temple to ask for help from the Kais, and the Prophets. The Kai of his province was more than happy to advise him, and after a weekend spent in her care at the temple, Tek came home to announce his plans to join Starfleet. While his mother was disappointed, she held great reverence for her religion, and if the Prophets led him down this path, she would not stand in their way. Tek applied for the Academy and spent his first month as an accepted student aboard DS9, learning from the station's Science officer about opportunities in Starfleet before being able to board a ship for Earth.
It was not the first time he was on Earth, but it was the first time he spent more than a couple of months, and never before had he been to San Francisco. But during his time at the academy, Tek found himself more at peace with himself, and gained an aptitude in the sciences. Following a similar track as his father, Tek began studying the natural processes of Earth, and went on for the upper level general planetary studies for different planets. His education took him to many of the planets in the Federation, including Vulcan, and he was even able to visit Qo'Nos to observe how different the planet was compared to what his instructor called "Cushy Planets". Tek graduated with high honors as an Ensign, but due to his temper when it came to certain subjects (anything Bajoran related or Cardassian related), he was kept in the Sol system for most of his first couple of years. It was after his first promotion that he was assigned to the USS Luna, and spent his next promotion aboard that ship. Finally, he has been reassigned off the Luna, but promoted to Lieutenant.

The shuttle landed outside the temple and Tek stepped out into the cool air. It was just after Ha'mara, and the temple was cleaning up from the celebrations the day before. It was by no means a mess, but they still worked diligently as if the entire place was trashed, cleaning the already pristine surfaces. Tek followed the small group that moved quickly instead for prayer and guidance, and found himself in a quiet room, facing the ornate shrine used as a focus for his prayer. Without another word, Tek took his place, thankful for being alone, and prayed to the Prophets for guidance.
To say he was confused was an understatement. He had no idea what he should do... he was at that age of adulthood, the age where he could choose where to go. Unlike the other Bajorans of his age, it was more than the idea of choosing between farming and city life. He had two worlds to consider, Earth and Bajor. He had already spent enough time on Earth that he wouldn't be against it, but he loved Bajor and all his fellow citizens. He was not without his own scrutiny... after all, he was not fully Bajoran. The lucky thing for him was that he still held his ridges, though they were softer. Some mixed children didn't have any ridges at all, and were considered more human than Bajoran. It wasn't a mark of shame, but it was a mark of indifference. After more than a half century of the Bajoran losing their identity, they took pride in themselves. And Tek was one of them.
His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Join Starfleet, seeing the galaxy, helping where he could. He even gave examples of Bajoran Starfleet personnel to show he would not be alone. His mother, however, was more of a traditionalist, and believed that Bajorans should stay home to rebuild the planet and strengthen the people and their faith in the Prophets. Never mind that the Emissary was himself a Starfleet officer... she logged that up to be a fluke. Instead she wanted him to be more spiritual, perhaps even join the Vedeks or the Governmental body.
"It’s not common for a young man to pray alone."
The sudden interruption threw Tek out of his own thoughts, and he turned to see the temple leader, Vedek Lanas. The elder woman stood behind him at the doorway, hand hooked together down her front, dressed in the robes of the vedek. She had just come in to light the candles, but stopped when she recognized the young man before her. Tek stood up slowly, and straightened his clothes. Lanas raised a hand to stop him, and gestured to return to his position.
"Please, don't get up on my behalf. You are troubled by something and need guidance. I will help you get those answer you seek from the Prophets."
The Vedek walked to him and knelt next to him, brushing his left ear, and closing her eyes. "Tell me, Tekin, what brings you to the temple?" Tek smiled at the altered name the vedek had been calling him, and he closed his own eyes to her touch, feeling the connection of his own Pah.
"I'm stuck between worlds; I don't know what to do. My father wants me to-"
"Your father wants you to embrace your human side, while your mother wants you Bajoran." she said, interrupting him. He had learned not to question such things... not anymore. The vedek pinched his earlobe while looking up, and smiling. "Your pah is tightly bound, twisted upon itself. You seem unsure of who you are. But despite what you might think, Tekin, your pah is no different from any other Bajoran. Each race has its own pah, even if they do not realize it. Your human side does nothing to degrade who you are. You are human, but you are also Bajoran, and nothing will change that. There you go... I can feel you relaxing already. I'm afraid we don't have a Tear to help you, but that does not mean the Prophets won't help you... follow my voice and we shall ask together."
Tek walked out of the room with the Vedek, who almost immediately was called away to help another. Tek headed for the entrance, a smile on his face for the first time in a while, and headed home. The answer he sought was given, and though only one of his parents would be truly happy for it, they would both find the answer acceptable. When he arrived home, he took both his parents into the same room, and announced his plans.
"I asked the Prophets for guidance, and with Vedek Lanas's help, I know what my path is. I am going to join Starfleet."
