"Aw... he's so cute!"
"Seriously?" Kealan looked from the anthropomorphic cat to Yolanda and back again. "You can't-"
"Excuse me, I am very tired, would you have some food?"
It spoke?? Not for the first time Kealan wondered if he hadn't walked away from the shuttle crash and this was some sort of pre-death dream as his brain tried to deal with the loss of blood and oxygen.
"I'm... sorry. We... we don't have any food."
Shaking his head at her questioning gaze, he suspected none of them had any food or water.
"You are lost, then," Puss asked. Thankfully, his eyes became less pleading and he put his hat back on his head. "Then it is my duty to save you," he said with a flourish of his gloved hand. "The name's Puss. Puss...in boots!"
A stomp of one of Puss' feet drew Kealan's eyes to the dusty boots. "Right...um." Fine. "Kealan, Nathan, Yolanda."
"Yolanda..." Puss bowed in front of the female officer. "It will be my honor to escort you to the oasis. There, we will all be able to feast and your beauty will be enjoyed by all."
"That's-" Kealan found himself uncharacteristically lost of words.
"Do not thank me," Puss said. He reached a paw up and put it inside of Yolanda's hand, expecting her to take it. "So, these servants of yours are not providing you with all you need?"
Kealan bit back a retort and looked at Nathan. "Yeah... We are only just learning to be at her beck and call."
"Novices," Puss exclaimed. "That explains it all. Come, Yolanda. At the oasis, we can find you better servants."
They walked down the steep switchbacks of the path until it finally leveled out into a beautiful meadow. "There," Puss said happily, pointing a finger at a green ring of trees. Colorful tents dotted the interior of the circle and a pool of crystal clear water made a crescent shape around one side. "I will run ahead an announce you!"
"Hopefully someone knows where we can find the others," Kealan said after Puss had disappeared from view. Seconds later, a horn blew and the oddest group of beings Kealan had ever seen emerged from the oasis. They were all different, all reminiscent of toys from long ago and some Kealan recognized from the current time. All were moving on their own, huge in proportion to what they should be to entertain a child, and coming toward them.
"Welcome to the oasis," a spotted elephant said. On his back was a cowboy, who in turn had a parrot on his shoulder. Upon closer inspection, the parrot could be seen carrying a cricket on his head like a hat.
A ballerina spun over to Nathan, taking his arm in hers, while a monkey crawled up Kealan and hugged his neck.
"This is the lovely Yolanda," Puss said, ignoring the two men. "Take her to be bathed, she is dusty from her journey. When she is ready, we will feast!" A stiff-legged flamingo put a plastic wing behind Yolanda to escort her to the pool.
"What about us," Kealan asked.
Puss turned, shocked that they really had spoken. "You can eat over there." A pile of food could be seen on a remote table. Small plastic insects buzzed over it, diving in occasionally to pick a choice morsel.
"Look, I'm-" A hand caught him by surprise. It wrapped around his bicep as if he were a scrawny kid.
"I know who you are," the blue man said, his skeletal eye sockets hiding the orbs that may or may not lay within. "Come with me, both of you, if you want information."
