Captain Tyne had not been real pleased when Stetson had requested the use of a runabout for an extended period, despite the reasoning Stetson had provided; nonetheless, the request had been granted, albeit a full day after he'd made the request. Stetson figured that the captain probably had had other plans for the craft that required ensuring its absence would not adversely affect DS10. In the end, it didn't matter; Stetson had his craft; the cadets, Kinin, and he were on their way to Peleb, and the cadets were chomping at the bit in anticipation of their arrival.
When they'd boarded, the first thing Stetson had done was to provide them their "marching orders" for their time on the planet. "Attention Cadets. First, let me introduce Cadet Nevir Tekison to the class," Stetson said, gesturing to the cadet. "Please take a moment to welcome him once we're done with this brief orientation."
Stetson waited for a moment while the cadets exchanged nods and hellos to Tekison. "You're likely wondering why we're on this vessel, where we're going, and what's going to be expected of you. You're going to be surprised; I know I was when I first received the orders from Starfleet Command."
"We are going to join the Talon at a planet called Peleb. I'll not go into a lot of explanation; instead, you can use your PADDs for the details. Read them carefully and in their entirety, otherwise you could offend the planet's inhabitants. Know that this is an R & R location where you should enjoy yourselves - within reason, of course!"
He watched as the expressions on their faces changed from sober reality to surprise, joy, and anticipation, followed by curiosity. "Like I said, I was caught off-guard about this as well, but Starfleet's reasoning, once explained, made sense. First, you're getting a chance to serve with your counterparts and mentors aboard the Talon. Second, and more important, this is likely the first time you've been to another planet as a Starfleet Officer. You need to learn how to interact with another species on its home turf, to live within their cultures, rules, and mores, while at the same time, to adhere to Starfleet codes of conduct. It can be a high wire balancing act, but that's what going to be expected of you when you serve with the fleet. Take this to heart."
"If there are no questions, take this time to briefly get acquainted with Cadet Tekison, then turn your full attention to your PADDs. You'll want to review the Talon's log for the last time it visited Peleb; it will provide you with crucial information not included in the standard information packet provided by Starfleet."
Seeing no questions, Stetson finished. "I'll leave you with one final thought. Take full advantage of this trip; you'll learn a lot along the way."
