"I am his...but I do not wish to be."
“What happens if you leave him,” he asked, though he was frankly afraid to know the answer. He worried it could be something like finding a purple dot on your chest, which was not an experience he would wish on anyone. “I had a crazy girlfriend once, but moving to another solar system helped a lot.”
Peleb must have had some kind of non-interference policy similar to Starfleet’s, but he had trouble imagining they could support such violence if they were truly the peaceful pleasure planet they’d been advertised to be.
Keith’s eyes widened as she grabbed his pointing hand and forced it downward, fearing that this time, she was definitely going to attack him, but she didn't. She seemed really scared of the other guy, and Keith sincerely hoped they’d be able to help her, but right now they seemed to be at the man’s tenuous mercy just as much as she was.
"Is this food,"
“Yes. Wai—,” Keith tried to grab the ration packet away from her, but she was too fast. Before he could do anything, she was shoving the food in her mouth, despite their earlier warnings. It’s probably fine he told himself.
It would make sense for emergency ration packs to be diplomatic friendly, he hoped. Keith glanced at her carefully, like he thought she might keel over and die in front of him, reading the label information with renewed fervor, his shoulders slumping with a relieved sigh when he found the safety statement he was looking for.
As she asked for more, Keith opened another packet, taking out one of the nutrition bars for himself before handing the rest to her. It seemed reckless to give away all their food without taking any for himself. And he was starving. He hadn’t eaten in almost six hours.
Keith heard raised voices, and watched as the woman grabbed at the ration pouches. He worried they’d have nothing left for themselves, assuming they didn't all get killed, thinking he should stop her, but sympathetic to the fact that she seemed so much hungrier than he was. There was the sound of an energy blast, then a scream, and Keith froze, afraid, because it didn’t sound like phaser fire.
“Wait,” he shouted at a whisper, grabbing Ecitor by the arm, not wanting either of them to die if they could help it. Maybe they could get the jump on her husband, or whatever he was, if and when he ventured back into the hold. Keith looked around for a weapon. He grabbed a flashlight, gripping it tightly as he moved cautiously toward the doorway.
