"I would like to remind you, Mr. Hargreaves, that if there are legal elements brought into this discussion you are allowed counsel provided to you from the civilian liaison aboard our vessel. You are free to contact them at any time."
One of the most common obstacles to an investigators work: lawyers. They were both infuriating and necessary, for they were an essential part of ensuring a person’s rights were protected. While Jeven knew his job would have been easier without Coardi’s timely reminder, he also knew it was important. That’s why he wanted her to be there. She could be the referee to protect not only Isaac, but Jeven himself. And since she did it, he didn’t have to--maintaining his focus and his leverage. Jeven believed humans called it “good cop/bad cop.”
“Commander, I won't pretend that this does not look uncannily suspicious, but let me take all of your points one after the other.”
As Isaac started into his defense, Jeven sat against the briefing room table, anticipating Isaac's passion with calm demeanor.
"I've already been berated by Captain Tyne for my huge lapse in judgement, so don't put me through that again, this whole situation has been hard enough already. But I assure you, Commander, that I did not intend her or Tyne any harm. That's what you should conclude."
Jeven had respect for the man’s confidence, if nothing else. He wasn’t reassured, however, whether or not that confidence was indicative of a conclusion to this situation he wanted. If Isaac was under the thumb of the Orion Syndicate, a lack of confidence gave Jeven more leverage to pull him out. The opposite implied intentional and criminal participation. He did not want to take Isaac down if he did not have to, but he would.
“Mr. Hargreaves,” Jeven started up. “Your tenacity notwithstanding, nothing you have said provides solid evidence that these events do not point to a criminal background in your past. You have given me only an interpretation from your perspective that I have only your word to believe that it is true. As much as I would like to believe you at your word, I cannot do so at risk of this ship and crew.”
