“My ‘job’ is about protecting this crew. All of them.”
He grimaced at the reminder, but wondered if she really ever had been truly tested in that loyalty. She had thrown her crewmates into a Brig without knowing why, so was it really a far stretch from what he had done? If Monroe told her to kill Eden, would Alyssa bat an eye?
"You designed and built a weapon intending to do just that! What else am I supposed to think?”
"I-" He waved a dismissive hand in the air.
“Jenison to Vargas: I need you in the Brig. It’s urgent.”
He shook his head slowly. Vargas didn't need to get involved. Not in this. He then asked for the final blow, which she denied him.
“I really don’t care. When Vargas gets here, you are going to tell her everything you just told me and more. I don’t care if you think it’s futile. I don’t care if it’s disobeying orders. You are going to find a way to undo this, or, believe me, I will make good on your request.”
"Waste of time," he said.
“I never really saw much resemblance between you and your brother…not until today.”
The final knife was plunged deep into his heart and he took in a sharp, emotion driven breath. From his position on the floor, he looked up at her, but she was done with him. As the field dissolved, he briefly saw his friends, but then, just as their lives would soon do, the image disappeared as the field solidified once again.
He thought of Colt and the joy that filled his brother's eyes when he killed or maimed.
There was no joy for Hunter.
Only pain.
