"They really like you."
"The feeling is mutual," Darby replied as he watched a butterfly flutter around Reyha-Ann's head after her father kissed it. That's what the universe needed! More butterflies. Soon, the entire park was blessed with butterflies, all of them knowing instinctively to stay away from oncoming rides.
"I think you are a father."
"I don't know about that," Darby said quietly.
"I think, before, I was too scared to be a dad because my parents were terrible but after meeting Tahp. I just felt like I had to do better. That probably sounds really vague but do you know what I mean?"
"I do," he agreed, nodding as two butterflies landed on his head like diaphanous horns.
"It's not easy but we gotta try harder every day. And learn how to cut gum out of hair and match socks because moms really hate it when their kids' socks don't match."
"I honestly don't remember doing any of that," he replied, searching his brain for any memory of children. The only ones he could remember were the twins of Sig and Tiria, the resultant birth caused by his own mistake. He pondered the universe, trying to locate them... and came to a horrible realization.
"Lily," Darby exclaimed. "Her name is Lily." And she had killed Sig. His own daughter. "No, no," he shook his head, trying to allow the pain to swallow the image.
As if summoned by the memory, she was suddenly there, with the man who took Sig's place on the Talon. He jumped in front of Micah and the kids, holding his arms outward, anger in his eyes. "STAY AWAY FROM THEM," he bellowed, scaring all within earshot.
