The hotel had been swarming with security. There'd been a whole coven of them clustered in front of a door down the hall, and when he'd popped down into the lobby he'd seen more of them, standing in a cluster by the door and arguing about something. It all felt distinctly unsettling, and old habits did die hard.
That was why, of course, Nathan had felt it was perfectly logical to give the hotel a wide berth for a moment or two. That it coincided with a desire to find the drink Colt had so unceremoniously denied him was only a bonus--that it would give him time to think up a plan and return to the hotel was definitely on his list.
After the drink, though. The order was deeply important.
Nathan found himself on a wide thoroughfare, surrounded by families and joyful participants in some weird rite of passage. Disney World, of course, he knew about--he'd seen advertisements for it, known a few kids who'd gotten to go during his time on Earth. Maybe he was just too old for it, too jaded, too preoccupied with things like not getting caught. He allowed himself a wry grin at the thought that, for once, he wasn't worried about being found out for anything he'd done, but rather for simply being who he was. That was a nice change of pace.
Whatever was going on in the greater Federation, however--dead President, dead ships--it hadn't seemed to touch this place yet, and by the time he'd turned a corner and found a little shop tucked in among others that seemed to promise some form of alcohol, he'd almost relaxed along with everyone else. Maybe this would be okay. Maybe someone would solve all this before he finished his drink, and he'd find himself back on the Talon, smiling at Alyssa.
Whiskey was very good at promising good things to him.
