Christof had calmed himself somewhat since his surprise conversation with his ex-wife. It never went well and, as always, he ended up feeling incredibly guilty over the whole thing, which made him even angrier. She always wanted him to see the kids at the most inopportune moments, almost as if she planned it that way. "I wouldn't put it past her," he muttered in the turbolift.
As he entered the Bridge, he was all business. Opening up a ship-wide comm, he said, "all hands, prepare for departure. Duty officers to the Bridge."
He went into his Ready Room and sat down at his desk, then contacted the Nike and connected to Kendra's quarters. Aaron's face wavered in front of the viewscreen. He still had not mastered the art of staying in the frame. His eyes were red.
"Dad!" Christof saw him put on a brave smile.
"Hi Squirt," he said. He was suddenly very sorry he hadn't taken the time.
Jack's legs appeared behind Aaron. "Hi Dad." He could tell by the tone of voice that Jack was in the middle of an emotional teenage tantrum and was not about to show his face. "Mom says Anna's okay?"
Christof found himself lowering his head as if it would help him see his older son better. "She's fine," he replied, "probably just wanted some time away from you guys. You haven't been hiding her underwear again, have you."
Aaron laughed and he elbowed his big brother in the hip.
"Kind of hard to do that when she's not around," Jack said. "You know how that is."
Christof suppressed the urge to sigh. "I know," he agreed, "and I'm sorry... I should have--"
"I'll go get Mom," Jack said, and his legs disappeared from the view.
"Wait--" But he was already gone.
"I found a rat on the Station," Aaron said proudly, then his lip pouted, "but Mom wouldn't let me keep him. I could go get him if you say it's okay!"
"Nice try," he said, "but you know you're supposed to listen to your mother."
"Yeah," Aaron said, leaning on his elbow so that only half of his face was visible, "but it was really cool. I have a holovid of it. I'll send it to you, okay?"
"Okay," Christof said. "And I'll send you vids from the Gamma quadrant."
"Dad?"
Um... okay... "Yes?"
Aaron looked over his shoulder, then back at the screen. Raising his hand, he brought it forward until it almost obscured the image. "I love you."
Christof's eyes filled with tears, the hard shell broken by the innocent words of an eleven year old.
"I love you, too, Squirt."
