Kane raised an eyebrow as Jack motioned him over. "In a second," he said to him. The man had not acted on his orders and Kane was wondering exactly who Jack thought was in charge here. He turned his attention back to the man seated on the biobed nearby.
"Physical, I like to get this sort of thing out of the way before my first duty shift so I don't end up doing it when I'm ordered to. For some reason, most doctors don't like having to order officers down to do their physicals."
"Wonder why that is," Kane asked rhetorically. He passed a tricorder over the man several times, changing the settings. Someone had been messing with the tricorders again. He wondered if Yaxley had been around lately.
"By the way, your bio bed seems to have a slight hum to it - I'll put in a work order when I get down to engineering to have it fixed."
Kane listened, but didn't hear a thing. "I'll take your word for it. I don't pay much attention to machines."
"It's Lieutenant Vincent Kane, I believe; I flipped through the ship's officers before I got on board. What do you prefer to go by?"
Lowering the tricorder, Kane stared at the man. "Seriously? Are you lacking good reading material, because I have some wonderful novels I could send to your PADD. Much more interesting than a list of strangers." Setting the tricorder aside, he added, "Vincent, Kane, Doctor, or Lieutenant are all interchangeable to me. And you are?" He glanced to the side and nodded to the Bajoran, just to let him know that he hadn't been ignored.
