"Maybe once in a while I need to think about what I want."
"Well, what do you want?" Quin asked. "Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?" Once she had figured that out, it would only be a matter of trying toword towards the goals that she had set. "Personally, I aspire towards a position as Chief Science Officer, but I don't know if I'm willing to sacrifice enough of my personal life to achieve that goal. So I think I could settle for Assistant Chief. I'd also like to learn more about my parent's cultures, since I was raised almost entirely on a Starship. It'd be nice to have children as well, but I'm not in so much of a rush for that." Fortunately, men didn't have to worry too much about when to have children, as their reproductive years weren't limited in the same ways that women's were. And of course, he'd have to settle down first, and he wasn't necessarily certain that he was ready for all that.
"I don't know whether I will or not. But I think I need to stop thinking I can only be happy if I do, right?"
"Right," Quin said. "Besides, people are more attracted to those who believe in themselves. People who've found the tricks to loving themselves, and who've developed a certain confidence from that knowledge. It's not easy, I confess, but these things will make every aspect of your life easier. Work, making friendships, relationships. All are impacted." Quin knew that the large part of his success with women wasn't in his looks. People were drawn to him because he was confident, even bordering on arrogant on occasion. He didn't let things get him down, and he had the ability to find humor in even the most unexpected of circumstances.
"And the best advice that I was ever given was to not lose sight of the small things in live. It's hard, after living in space and seeing all sorts of wonderful things to appreciate the common everyday things. But it's these things - the sweetness of chocolate on your lips, the way a sun feels warm on your face in a way artificial lights can't reproduce, the scent of fresh air... these things are the ones that make getting up every morning worthwhile." His hand wandered up her back and his fingers trailed lightly through her hair, without him even realizing what he was doing.
