"Salvage team?"
They nodded in unison and looked at the group while trying to judge their emotions. It seemed as if none of them shared the same one as the others. Of course, they all seemed to be from different species. One had a fuzzy ring around his mouth, the female was spotted, another dark with strange ridges and the last one...well, something was wrong with his hands.
"Well, you have still breached the security of this ship, and for that you must pay the consequences."
Rapid breath began steaming the inside of their visors again. "What kind of...consequences?" But the brown one was whispering, probably plotting their doom. Suddenly, the female began talking and her tone sent a chill up the spines of the two intruders. They remained quiet, not wanting to set her off on them. When she was done, she turned to them.
"You're not 'torqued'. The bomb didn't hurt anyone. So you're the salvage team. First of all, whatever's wrong with her I can fix it; she's not just space junk."
"No," the larger muttered. "She was beautiful."
"But more to the point, what happened to the ship? Usually you don't salvage ships full of people. So why's she being salvaged?"
The pair looked at each other for a moment, then the larger stepped slightly in front of the other. "Things haven't exactly gone according to plan," he admitted.
"Sorry, sir, I've just been under a lot of stress lately due to my grandmother being taken to hospital. But you're right. What do you think we should do now?"
The brown one wasn't in charge! Maybe this was a matriarchal society. "You could let us go," he suggested.
"Ensign, when you face a lion, you swallow your fears and worries and you face that lion. You worry about the rest later."
The UT couldn't translate 'lion' into their language, so Cliff's statement was confusing to the aliens. The smaller tapped the larger on the shoulder. "We're going to die, so just tell them."
"We're not going to die." He looked at the female. "Are we?" It was rhetorical. Whatever these aliens wanted to do with them, they would do it. There was little the intruders could do. Fighting in the small space could end the life of the baby, and that was not acceptable. He opened the slit of his mouth and let out a quick breath. "Usually pods are deployed by now and the ship is empty. Our... well, our bomb was supposed to hasten your departure." He glanced at the wall, his hand momentarily caressing the metal. "But this is a strong ship." His eyes glazed over for a second as he considered how amazing it would be to work on such a vessel. Only after getting an elbow from his partner did he look back at Cobus. "We need parts," he said. It sounded hollow and desperate all at the same time. Never had he been forced to explain their procedures before and, hearing it himself, he was ashamed.
