"You did really well today. All those people that you've helped, you should be proud. I'm proud of you."
Feeling her hand on his arm and hearing her comforting voice he looked up at Areth and gave her a weak grin. Her soft, glowing face somehow made him feel better.
Perhaps it was because he was overly tired or because the situation presented itself, but he found himself not caring at the moment what others thought and went completely on instinct when he bent over and kissed Areth on her mouth. It wasn't a passionate kiss nor was it a friendly kiss but it was a quick kiss showing his interest and appreciation. For Luis it was very bold as he seldom, if ever, expressed those kinds of feelings to anyone. In fact, if a female was too forward it would make him run for the hills, so to speak.
No sooner had he done it than he pulled away from her, partly out of embarrassment and partly out of fear. Fear of her rejection, fear of reprimand from his superiors, just plain fear.
Full of self-repulsion he forced himself to look back at her. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I won't do it again," he reprimanded himself and lowered his head in shame and turned his face away from her with a deep sigh. He wouldn't blame Sig if he came out now and chewed him out. He would deserve everything sent his way. Thrown in the brig, court-martialed, expelled from Starfleet with shame.
How could he face his father knowing he had brought such shame upon his family's name? He was supposed to carry on the family tradition of medical doctors. The name Diego was synonymous with the medical field where he was from. He planned on one day becoming a part of the medical practice his Great-Grandfather had built up. If he ever had a son it was his job to mold him to become a doctor someday.
How could he be so stupid to let his emotions get the best of him? Maybe the Vulcans had it right all along. The less you showed of yourself the less vulnerable you were.
They say the hardest person on you is you and he was being very hard on himself.
