"Tiria is fine. She actually kept me from injuring my fool head when I fell over."
"I'm glad she's fine," he nodded. Dr. Williams nodded in agreement
"As for what's going on out there... we somehow got sucked into a wormhole. I'm not sure we even know where it dumped us, but we collided with a bunch of debris in the process."
"I was right," Luis chuckled, shaking his head. "We're in a junkyard. I saw it from the window in my quarters. Pieces of metal and hunks of what looked like star ships. I was telling someone earlier that my father used to talk about a junkyard in his old neighborhood. Said there was these strange people that owned it and had vicious dogs that chewed people up if they trespassed. Creepy."
"It's black out there. No stars, nothing. Ever been in a cave when they turn out the lights? It's a weird feeling. Your body and brain can't cope and it produces a profound dizziness. You have no visual clues. There was an ice cave near my home. I used to take dates there and douse the lights. It's amazing how fast they cling to you when you do."
Luis and Frank laughed at Sig's story. He had never heard the CMO be so candid before and he was enjoying it. The burden of the last harried hours seemed to lighten. "I will keep that in mind," Luis told him. "I wonder, think I could find a program for a dark cave in the holosuite to take a date?" Then he thought of the two women he had just recently met, Kelsey and Luminareth. Maybe when things got settled and they found out where they were he might set it up.
"If you want to take a break, I've got this. Up to you."
Luis looked at Frank. "I'll stay," Williams said with a nod. "Luis has been at it longer than me. I've still got a few hours left in me. I don't mind," he told Sig and then turned back to Luis. "There was a couple of times I thought you were going to go out on me. You go get you something to eat and drink. If we need you we'll call."
"Alright," Luis agreed with a weary sigh. "I won't argue with you. I'll be in the sickbay if you need me. Thanks, you two," his eyes smiled behind the mask and he went into the sterilization bay where he took off the disposable surgeon's garb then, depositing it into the waste chute where it would be disintegrated, he went out into the sickbay.
He was so tired he felt he could barely walk but made his way over to the shift doctor's desk and plopped into the chair. All he wanted was some coffee and a bite to eat but he was just too tired to move.
As rough as the day had been he knew that it could have been worse; far worse. Wait! Had Sig said there were no stars? Nothing? How was that even possible?
For a moment his eyes blurred and his head pounded. Covering his eyes with his hands the darkness seemed to make the aching in his head ease off some. Folding his arms on the desk he laid his head down taking advantage of the quiet.
