"We are sorry," Choth said. "We did not mean to expose you."
Dorian didn’t exactly smile but his expression did lighten up just a bit. Cobus started to apologize but broke off before completing his sentence. He appreciated the trill’s restraint in exposing the patently wrong notion the two aliens had gotten about him. But the fact that they had had probably saved the ship from further damage at their hands.
"Then we thank you," Choth said. "The Mehtak were formidable. But not as deadly as-"
The omission led him to lean forward slightly waiting for the sentence to complete but Choth coughed instead of finishing what he’d intended to say. They obviously wanted to keep that bit of information to themselves for now.
Then his wife’s voice came over the comm calling one of the Ensigns into the office with her. He was certain she had a good reason to stay out of sight though he would have welcomed her intuition in dealing with the situation. She had a unique way of seeing things in black and white when most things to him were in shades of gray.
"What happened to Etimon was nothing compared to the fate of the Bacohl. We are few now. What we have done is shameful and out of desperation. We used to build for others. Now we build only to survive."
“To survive the others?” Dorian didn’t want to let them think he hadn’t followed what they’d ‘almost’ said about an enemy worse than the Mehtak.
The Dominon had once ruled the Gamma Quadrant, but the Changlings had been gone for some time now. If another power had arisen to replace them Dorian wanted to know about it sooner rather than later. If they were talking about the Dominion then he might have good news for the people obviously hiding in their Void.
