"Yes ma'am. I have nothing else to add."
"That is unfortunate," she said. With long, slow steps, she circled around him, then stopped directly in front of him. "The ship was in a red alert state. Intruders were detected and you, along with Ensign Diran, were the first of security on the scene." Her eyes bored into his. "You made a mistake." She paced around him again, then stopped as before, but this time with a finger raised in front of his face. "You let an engineer call the shots in an intruder scenario. You backed down. You let someone else handle your job." Her finger poked him in the sternum. "That is your mistake." She sighed and lowered her hand, then smiled softly at him. "Ensign, if there is an intruder, your priority is to secure the scene, no matter what a lofty engineer has to say. The safety of the ship is worth his chagrin at you telling him to shut up." Placing a hand on his shoulder, she continued. "You should not have apologized for doing your job."
Taking a step back, she raised a tufted eyebrow. "However, I am going to chastise you for apologizing and looking weak in front of the aliens. Never let them see your mistakes. There is a time and place for that, and it is not in front of creatures we know nothing about. I would like you to review first contact procedures so that this does not happen again. I have remained in this office purely because of those procedures. It would not help the situation to add my species to the mix, just as I would not wish an Andorian to suddenly appear, either. The fewer surprises, the better the outcome."
Kinin returned to the desk and sat down. "What has happened has been noted here." She pointed to her head. "But not in here." The finger arced down to the PADD in front of her. "See that I have no reason to regret that decision. Dismissed."
