Maybe because she couldn’t see, she seemed to hear every titter and whispered comment as they went from Sickbay to the turbolift. Gasps at her obvious pregnancy we followed by sighs as some of the female crew caught sight of their almost naked first officer. That caused a little green imp of jealousy to rear its ugly head but she had no way to identify the females responsible nor would she have done anything about it if she had.
It wasn’t as if Van had a reputation for womanizing even before they were stranded on the planet alone for so long. He had actually been rather unattainable, if that was a good way to put it. Truthfully it had taken them both a fair amount of time to stop calling one another by their rank. It had taken that time all alone caring for a dying crewman to bring them so close to one another and get past the fact they were the sole humans on the planet.
She didn’t quite know which bothered her more right now, that he’d called her Lieutenant or that other women found him so damned attractive. Not that she blamed them.
She loved him, she loved him deeply. Beyond that she realized he hadn’t really felt the same way about her. But when she was the only other person in the world it didn’t really matter. Now it did.
By the time they reached his door she was thoroughly ready to be out of the public eye. Beyond that she was weary, bone deep weary. It had only been a couple of weeks since her illness and she’d still been slowly regaining her strength. She sank into the chair he’d led her to and brought up the other thing that had been on her mind.
“What did I do,” she asked.
