Reesa’s hands trembled as they moved over the controls of the small Cardassian shuttle. She’d learned how to pilot on a similar vessel when she was barely high enough to see over the console, yet after nearly five years of exclusively flying Starfleet vessels, it felt wrong to her to fly anything else. She reminded herself that everything was in order; she’d received the proper permissions to depart Federation territory, and the Task Force personnel department knew that she would be encountering Cardassian citizens and technologies in her journey.
Part of her wondered why she’d been allowed to go. While Starfleet was concerned for their officer’s feelings, most vacation requests didn’t involve consorting with members of antagonistic species.
You’re half Cardassian, she reminded herself quickly. But that was all the more reason for Starfleet Command to deny her request.
Still, it seemed as though her mother’s long illness was soon to come to an end, and she supposed that Command wanted to avoid Reesa harboring resentment if she did not get to see her mother before her passing. “She’ll be alright,” she said softly, hoping that her wishful thinking would come to fruition.
Lissepia lay in territory that was technically neutral; claimed by neither the Federation, nor Cardassian. But after the mass destruction of the Dominion War, many powerful Cardassian families had chosen to take cover there. This coupled with the planet’s use as a dumping ground for “unwanted” half-Bajoran children during the Occupation made Lissepia more Cardassian-aligned. Still, Lissepia had strong trade agreements with the Federation, and because of this fact, it wasn’t strictly off-limits for Starfleet personnel.
As she approached Lissepia Prime, she partially concealed the shuttle by flying closely around Lissepia’s moon. Diverting power to sensors, she scanned the area, looking for anything suspicious. On this side of the planet, much of the air traffic was Cardassian, and it was for that reason that Reesa had chosen not to take a Starfleet vessel.
An incoming hail came from the planet, and she put it on audio only, not wishing for her Bajoran nose ridges to betray her full heritage. Mixed bloods like her weren’t terribly uncommon around Lissepia, but they were still rarely treated with proper respect.
“Cardassian shuttle Ahn’tak, please state your purpose.”
“Lissepia Station, this is Adora Jerek of the shuttle Ahn’tak, requesting permission to land at the coordinates I am presently transmitting,” she said. There was a momentary pause, and Reesa knew it was due to the use of her proper Cardassian surname. Legate Jerek had been extremely well-known, and had a large, well-respected family.
Minus two dirty little secrets: Enahia Jerek and her daughter Adora.
Reesa’s heart pounded in her chest as she awaited the station’s response. Hopefully, they would assume she was just a minor relation of the Legate, someone who wasn’t particularly well-known. Hopefully they wouldn’t pull up her full record.
“Ah, yes. You’re cleared for landing.” Reesa flipped off the communication from her side before they changed their minds. She managed to land without incident in a small clearing near her parent’s dwelling. Taking a deep breath, she pulled the hood of her cloak up over her head. her hands stopped briefly on both the locket, and the brooch that she’d received in mysterious packages aboard the Talon.
Stepping out from the shuttlecraft, she walked into the last person she expected to see on Lissepia Prime.
