Shahn had appeared unexpectedly in Ahska's chambers early in the morning. "It has been one hundred seasons," Shahn said simply.
"You will prepare," a voice from the doorway said.
Looking past Shahn, Ahska saw Esohn. He was wearing her father's best robes and Ahska swallowed hard at the sight. "I am to be released," Ashka asked. She still had many days of her solitude.
"No," Esohn said. "But they may want to see you. You should be-" He glanced at her wardrobe and frowned. "Presentable."
Self consciously smoothing her wrinkled sleeping gown, and pulling her hair back away from her face, Ahska just nodded.
"And you will color your hair."
Shahn spun on her heel to face the ruler and rebuff his inappropriate order, but seeing his stern face made her reconsider. "I'll see to it," she said, instead.
Once Esohn was gone, Shahn helped Ahska into the bath and began the ritual cleansing.
"Shahn," Ahska finally found the courage to say. "How are my children?"
Working on Ahska's back, Shahn didn't hide the expression that appeared on her face, but she did keep an even tone when she spoke. "They are fine," she said. "The features are forming." She blinked and wiped away a tear before continuing to bathe her friend.
"I hope to see them soon."
Shahn just kept quiet, then changed the subject. "I'll tell you everything about the visit," she said with a gaiety in her voice she didn't feel. "The stories I've heard... I hope they do come see you." She knew Ahska needed something to take her mind off of things. And to stop asking questions. "Now, what color do you want? Orange is very popular."
"The usual. You know that."
"Of course," Shahn said. "But I had to try." Ever since she had the power to make her own choice, Ahska had chosen the color of her mother's hair. No amount of convincing could ever change it. However, this time Shahn had a plan of her own. Several Etimonians had taken to putting two colors in, something they learned from other species. Shahn readied the pink, but also pulled out a smaller mixture of violet.
