Ahska frowned slightly at the odd way in which Jonah was walking as he went to fetch her water and the length of time he stood in front of the machine after the drink appeared. When he returned, she looked up at him. "I did not hurt you, did I," she asked, obviously concerned about his well-being.
"Would you permit one of our doctors to examine you? We have an excellent medical staff, and perhaps if we can identify the poison, we can provide you with the means to counter it."
It was as if a weight had been lifted from her small shoulders and she let out a breath of relief. "Thank you," she said. "If you trust the doctor, I will also. I would have asked Doctor Yaxley for help, but as I said, he has disappeared."
"He is in no danger, but the speed with which his departure had to be affected most likely did not give him time to contact you. If you'd like to pass a message to him I can certainly arrange that, though I cannot promise how swift the reply might be."
One more weight disappeared from her mind. "No," she replied. "I do not wish to worry him." She also knew that the Rigelian would drop everything if he knew what had happened. It was an odd bond they shared, that was true. She looked down at one of her bracelets, the one which included a bead that had once adorned the man's hair. "He is very protective of me and I do not wish to ruin his career path."
She sipped the water slowly. "I can only stay for the day," she said. "Esohn is on a hunting trip." She shivered. "He will be back just after dark." She turned slightly toward Jonah. "While the majority of my people are vegetarians, the soldiers have long taken to hunting and eating the flesh of animals for strength against the Mehtak. I had hoped that the tradition would cease after our liberation, but it has been the opposite. Many have taken to discovering new foods on the Station, including different forms of meat." She took another sip. "It is not something I wish to try."
