Rychel had worked two back to back shifts in engineering, so despite the red alert she’d been dismissed relatively quickly to go back to her quarters and get some rest. On the way there she’d stopped and gotten a quick bite to eat in the mess hall, and a bit of tea to help her relax enough to sleep.
She’d only been in her quarters for a moment when she got a message alerting her to a call from her brother, on the special channel reserved for Starfleet Intelligence official business. Though she’d had access to the channel for a while, Desan had only used it once or twice to communicate with her. Clearly, something important had transpired.
She toggled the display in her room on, and Desan’s face filled the monitor. He looked stressed, more so than he’d ever seemed before, and this immediately put Rychel on edge.
“Where is Gav?”
I thought he was supposed to watch me, not the other way around, she thought, but decided it would be better not to verbalize that. “I’m not sure, he isn’t answering? We’re at red alert right now, but I’m not certain why.” They never tell us Engineers anything.
“See if the Talon’s computer knows.”
“Alright,” Rychel said. “Computer, location of Lieutenant Iresh Gaviskar?”
“Lieutenant Gaviskar is not aboard the Talon.”
She’d seen the list of people that were on the away teams earlier, and she knew that Gav had not been among them. And even if he had been, Desan would likely not be so concerned about his whereabouts.
“I want you off the Talon.” Anger flared within her. Why couldn’t he trust her to take care of herself?! She didn’t mention that, though, as she had managed to get in a good bit of trouble.
“Desan, we are not having this discussion again.” She opened her mouth to say more, but was interrupted by the telltale whine of a transporter beam behind her. Her phaser was in her hand before the sound terminated, but nothing had appeared. Still, nothing seemed to be missing insofar as she could tell...
“What was that?” Desan demanded.
“I... I don’t know, it sounded like the transporter.” Real smooth, ‘Chel, like he doesn’t know what a transporter beam sounds like. She quickly checked the logs to see what exactly had occurred. “Yeah, someone just transported something from my quarters to the brig.”
“They what?!”She didn’t need to look to know that Desan was thoroughly riled.
“I’m going to the security office, I’ll see what’s up and call you right back,” Rychel said. Realistically if someone was transporting things around in her quarters, she would in theory be safest at the brig. I can’t imagine someone took over the brig, so what in the world is up?
“Be careful. Take off your communicator. And make sure you’re armed.”
You sound just like dad.
“Yes, Desi,” Rychel said, knowing full well that it would push his buttons.
“That’s Commander Kayden to you, Lieutenant. Just because you’ve been promoted doesn’t mean you’re allowed to be impudent when Starfleet security matters are involved. Go now. Don’t come back to your quarters until you know it’s safe.”
“Of course,” Rychel said, as she terminated the connection from her end. Checking her phaser, she took off her communicator and sat it down on the bed. Then, she departed her quarters, en route to the brig.
End
