Captain Fedorov received word while still in his quarters. As Captain of such a huge station, he had (grudgingly) become accustomed to taking messages at all hours of the day. He really didn't have a personal life, not that he sought one out. His position on the station was temporary and getting involved with someone would have just caused more problems. This wasn't to say that he restrained from certain pleasures. There were plenty of women who weren't tied to the one-man ideal. Bajorans, especially, were intrigued by him due to his birth history. He found it laughable that they thought him special because of it. A person's birthplace did not define who they were, not in the least.
There was no trepidation, remorse, or any such emotion in him from the news. In fact, he was looking forward to his next assignment, hopefully one that would use his skills on a ship for a long time to come. He had already packed.
As he entered the command deck, though, he did realize that he would miss some of the people there. This crew had been through a lot of command changes since the construction was complete and he hoped this would be the last of it for a long while. "Can I have your attention," he said. When the normal noise of the room died down, he looked around, trying to meet the eyes of each and every one of them. "I know you've been surprised before by abrupt changes, so I want you to know ahead of time that you'll be getting a new Captain."
There was a groan from someone at the flight ops station and he laughed. "You all knew it was coming. I never made any claim that this was anything more than temporary. I've read his dossier and you're getting a good man."
"When?"
He nodded at one of the engineering specialists. "Today, probably. His ship should be coming through the wormhole soon. I know change is difficult, and you all have had your fair share of Captains in too short of a time period. It's easy to let that make you jaded, but I expect each and every one of you to treat him with the respect he is due, not as someone who may or may not be around for a while." There were nods of affirmation that his wish would be carried out.
"Now, it's business as usual until he arrives. What's the word on that transport in the docking bay?"
"Still under repair, Sir," came the reply. "Their perishables have been transported to a holodeck, where the temperature can remain constant during the shutdown."
"Great," Vlad smiled. "See that their crew gets free entertainment and food credits while they're here." He sat down in the command chair and began checking on reports as they all waited for the new brass to arrive.
