Adam wandered the beach, guitar in hand, as the salt spray licked across his cheeks, mixing with the dried trails that had come from his eyes over the course of the day. His voice was hoarse from singing over the gravesites of strangers, and his heart was heavy with remorse. Yet, as he gazed up at the sky, the smoke had all but cleared and it renewed him to see the crystal blue once again. Way out there, a ship that would be his home was probably waiting, though he had no idea which ship it would be. He had lost colleagues and friends, both to death and to the uncertainty of their profession.
A gull flew by, circling twice in the off chance that he had something to offer, before joining others on the wing in search of their next meal. Crabs skittered out of the way of his tanned feet and Adam smiled at their sideways gait. Adam's skills, or lack thereof, were useless on the wasteland of destruction, so he had put his real talent to use since he arrived, volunteering his voice to say goodbye for those who couldn't find the words. He ate with strangers, sitting quietly as they tried to make sense of something that never would be understood, and offered to help in any way he could. He watched children so that relatives could talk in private to arrange their futures without parents, he cleaned so they would not have to, and his arms encircled more people than he thought possible in such a short period of time.
Clearing his throat, he startled a plover, sending the small ping pong ball shaped bird scurrying back to its nest in the sand where tiny chicks cried out for another meal. Adam watched them for a while, feeling guilty in his intrusion upon their lives. Sand fleas began swarming around his ankles, so he continued moving, looking for the right spot. Spotting a large piece of driftwood, more like a log, he sat down on it, pulling his feet off of the ground as he cradled his guitar. Strumming a few random notes, he hummed for a second, finding the right key. As he began to sing, he looked out across the water. There would be great loves in his life, he was sure of it, but everyone would remember their first. Even if she considered him just exercise...
As he sang, he drew a small crowd. The tune was catchy, and the meaning something that resonated differently in each and every one of them.
Don't forget about me.
