They had a happy system going as they plowed through the data with a determination that seemed to breed amongst Starfleet officers. It was one of those unwritten ingredients that wrapped around a crew and provided the moisture for the mortar that held them together as a team. These sorts of subtle things can make or break an officer. Those that survived rose up from the ashes tempered and gilded with such perseverance that was birthed by this determination.
The red head known as Caroline would sort through the sound files and data with prejudice. She would not sacrifice quality over quantity. Those light blue eyes would turn towards Zaynah when she sent a new packet. She kept them small and manageable to create a steady flow. Zaynah liked the oddest things. Normally the little lady didn’t watch holo episodes, but she watched holo shows with her new roommate. They didn’t seem to really change that much and found too many questions as to why people acted that way in the show , programming errors or even technical information errors. It didn’t make sense. Even the jokes she questioned, which of course ruined the jokes. Caroline would then retreat into her room as politely as she could upon realizing how awkward the whole thing the situation turned out to be. At this busy time with this translation, she thought briefly still that an ice cream night might smooth things over.
"This...Is …..Like pulling teeth."
That dainty little head turned as her eyes became sympathetic. “It can be daunting, sorry?” In theory the data wasn’t going to apologize so maybe to make her feel better Caroline would apologize for the thing. It made sense at the time. “Encrypted data and cipher can be just as troublesome. I remember a time.. “she stopped as her face darkened a little before blinking away. “well no time for that.. sorry.” The nervous girl tried to chuckle it away lightly.
The technician returned to her task with renewed vigor using work to combat those welling feelings she wanted to just forget. Those eyes trailed over towards Lieutenant Harker. That lady was something else altogether. The woman was smart and engaging. Caroline wished she could be as engaging. That was squashed out of her. There was a fine line between admiration and jealousy. If one would look at it in a different light they seemed as brothers. Those fears acquired from such circumstances no human being should have ever been in do not go away with a simple statement of ‘just let it go.’ Still the blonde lady had such a friendly personality that Caroline was glad to have met her. Suddenly, those musings she assimilated and packaged data packets came to a startling halt.
"Everyone stop!"..."This isn't a conversation...it's instructions for how to disable a ship."..."If we continue, we would give the Pewdin what is probably classified information from three races the Federation has yet to encounter."..."But if we don't..."
The computer technician was over to Zaynah’s console in a flash of quick movements as she looked at what was on her screen. Those quick eyes darted along the data. She slowly bent back up into a standing position as her brow furrowed, crossed her arms loosely as one cocked up and her fingers was on her face as the one long finger tapped her cheek in a slow ponderous rhythm. Her face turned stark cold stoic after a few moments.
"Well that's nice" …. "Right, do we have any way of identifying these species and their relationship with the Pewdin?"
The sarcasm was lost on the tiny woman as that finger that was tapping her cheek stopped before landing on her mouth. The light tap was continued on the rose of her lip. After a few more moments, that too stopped.
She motioned for the other two to get closer before she would wrap her arms on each of their shoulder in a huddle. Her voice was very low and very quiet. “That is intelligence data. If the Pewdin knew it was intelligence data, why did they give it to us to translate? No self-respecting intelligence department would give up intelligence data like that. If that is intercepted classified data, our first duty is to the ship. This could endanger this ship and this is too big for any of us. Normally protocol would tell us to give it to our chain of command. Unfortunately most of the chain is not available accept the Captain.”
What does a tech do while the computer was chewing on something? Curiosity could be a good thing or a bad thing. In this case she was curious where her department was at. Maybe it was to see how far away they were in case crap hit the fan. Maybe there was that little something nagging at the back of her mind on this whole thing. This separation of these teams was throwing up more red flags. The question begged 'what would Musashi do'. 'No, what would the chief do, or even Lieutenant Jenson?' Those eyes widened as a soft smile slowly curled up.
“I mean we do need to have someone check our work and make sure its quality. After all we don’t want to provide the Pewdin shoddy workmanship.” There was a spark in those light blue eyes. They may catch a glimpse of the inner strategist that she kept strictly under wraps.
Perhaps this was a mistake to put her foot out there again. The redhead did it during the Klingon invasion they had battled in. It cost them a commander and a whole team, but that was war. At least that was what that complicated little mind kept telling herself. The nervous girl swallowed hard and continued.
She looked at the both of them in the eyes. “This can happen in a couple of ways well maybe three.” She continued as her voice got whisper quiet. “I can bundle it,encrypt it well and send it by normal channels. The Pewdin is monitoring traffic. “ she provided as she spent enough time in the sensor array to pick a few things up but ignored up till now as it seemed standard operating procedure. “I could send the package in a round-about way and hopefully avoid detection.” She reminded them of the terms of the test and the loop hole she saw. “The Pewdin said to translate the data. They didn’t specify as to the route it takes to get to them.” The third option was half baked so she left it unsaid.
The huddle might look weird but it kept their lips facing each other and not at the video devices. The whispered voice was in a low tone. The lower tones are harder to pick up. It might mean her teammates have to get a little closer than she wants but this was getting really serious. The Captain needs this data.
