"My head is firin' up something fierce, I can't directly think straight... cracked up orders "
From his position in front of the console, all Hunter could do was listen to the homespun complaining that drifted his way. There was an epidemic on the ship, all right, and it was to language. That hot security officer, Eden, was the worst. Too bad there wasn't a vaccine for that. Shaking his head, he had the computer begin deconstructing the alien DNA from the sample.
"An infected patient would be a gift."
Hunter startled at the sound of the voice, and he turned to give Bernard a self-conscious glare. "Yeah," he agreed before turning back to his console. The tappings of the Assistant Chief's fingers was oddly therapeutic. It meant data was incoming, though Hunter had no idea that it pertained to their own case.
"This might due for now. Recognize anything, Lieutenant?"
Swiveling in his chair, he found himself staring at yet another diseased cell, though it was not as beautiful of those of the Pewdin. It was ordinary. Human. And... He looked from the display to Bernard and back again. "Where?!"
"Oh my hat..."
Exactly.
"Metters. I need blood from Mr. Lynch and Ensign Warren."
Hunter was already standing and, as Bernard ordered them to hurry, Hunter stepped out into the other room, as if his presence would speed things along. It only took a couple of minutes to draw the blood and Hunter followed the medic like a puppy dog back into the lab, the deep red of the vials taunting him with their secrets. Thankfully, Bernard relinquished them to him, and Hunter got to work preparing the samples. "Too bad Sig's not here," he said as he worked. "He lives for this kind of thing." Not that Bernard didn't, but this was Hunter talking.
"Okay," he finally breathed, and the new images appeared on his screen. "Ohhh." It was one thing to look at an alien cell and give a supposition as to damage, but seeing it on a human cell was more telling, as they knew what they were supposed to look like. "Same as the Pewdin sample," he said. He glanced over to Bernard. "You need to alert the Captain."
He frowned at the sample. This was not good. "Look, here," he said. "This one is almost necrotic."
Tad, who was still hanging around hoping to learn a few things from the two men in the room, leaned over to look. "How?"
"Membrane soluble or pore-forming compounds may act directly on the cytoplasmic membrane and prevent the cell from maintaining homeostatic integrity," Hunter said. "It would naturally lead to necrosis. We need to get this stopped quickly." He stood up and walked over to the two biobeds. "Did any of the Pewdin touch you, if so, where?"
