"This is it," Bernard wondered aloud. He knew this was a test of sorts but this was a tad bit ridiculous.
Leaning his tall, slender frame over he stared at the samples that rested atop the desk at eye level to gain a new perspective, drumming his fingers along the hard surface while humming a simple melody. The department was given a set of two vials containing dark brown blood, the viscose liquid clinging to the clear phial like gel, and a sample jar of urine that practically glowed with a lime green hue. It didn't seem like very much to work with but they'd come up with something somehow.
Several moments passed as the doctor looked upon the items but they weren't giving him any answers but where there's a will there's a way and with a new ship there were plenty of scanners to get the job started.
"Ensign, will you prepare the biocomputer and the electronic microscope for the blood samples while I take some readings," Bernard ask Grace in his usual calm tone of voice. "Lieutenant Hunter should be here at any moment and I would dread for him to see us idle."
Rising to his full height he offered the nurse a quick smile. Grace Cunningham was a clever young woman, incredibly capable both in her field and in life, a quick learner, and was very wise to take advantage of Ericson's tutelage. There were some things that Starfleet Medical were unable to teach like warmth, compassion, and amiability that she employed every day and he couldn't help but imagine a stellar future for her and he held no doubts that she would teach him a thing or two as well.
As for William Hunter...maybe it was best to wait and see if his reputation was hard earned.
Taking out his tricorder he began to scan the murky life source for what it was worth; there wasn't anything in their databanks to compare the samples to but data collecting was still a critical first step and whenever they were finished with this monumental task then they'd have plenty of information for future endeavors. How many articles could one right about a breakthrough like this? It was an exciting notion.
There were some similarities to human blood; there were cells that carried oxygen with nutrients and there were other bits and pieces that floated along in the mixture but what they were and what they did were still a bit of a mystery on this side of a medical tricorder. Was the color and the thickness normal or was there something amiss? What numbers were considered to be within the realm of normal? The tricorder simply wasn't having an easy time reading the sticky fluid and it was pitching a fit in his hands.
A long breath left Bernard's lips as he looked toward the sickbay doors hoping Lieutenant Hunter would step through and provide a little insight without turning the tranquil space inside out.
