"Was it left behind intentionally? Forgotten? Misplaced? Is it native to the planet-that-once-was, or is it from whomever did the destroying?"
Even without trying, Georgia could feel the wave of guilt that washed over him as he spoke. Was he thinking of his own son? Probably. It was heartbreaking to know he was hurting so much and not really be able to do anything about it. What was she supposed to say? It'll be alright?
She wasn't in the business of lying to make someone else feel better these days. Besides, he wasn't the sort to take such platitudes well anyway.
"Careful, Button. I just may have to steal you from Sur'Shess permanently."
Yolanda's words surprised Georgia, even though she knew the science chief was only joking. It was a compliment nonetheless, and from the wave of panic that she felt from Hunter she guessed not everyone had realised it wasn't really a serious offer.
"Thanks for the compliment," she said, with a gentle laugh, "but I'd look terrible in blue."
Hunter slammed his palm onto the desk and without thinking Georgia placed her hand briefly on his shoulder, giving it the slightest of reassuring squeezes before she let go again.
"Lieutenant, monitor the readings that Mr. Hunter is taking on our desk. Use that to infer the type of climate and environment most conducive to this organism's survival. Then cross-reference it with the planets that support such conditions... 85% or better. Let's allow a little wiggle room."
"Yes, ma'am," she replied, smartly, pulling up a workspace on the terminal next to Hunter's. Her eyes wandered over the data as it scrolled across Hunter's screen, trying to make sense of information that was a little too biological to really be in her comfort zone.
She tapped out a few lines of musings onto her own workspace, then pointed over at a line in front of Hunter.
"This bit," she said, as she indicated, "that's metabolic, right?"
She braced herself for the haughty derision she was sure was going to follow her query. Still, it was better than some of the alternatives.
