Sig walked into the shuttlebay with a pained look on his face. The creature had not stopped wailing since it had been moved from Sickbay and Sig now had a top-level headache. "Can't you just shut up," he said as he waited for Jenison to make an appearance. He tried gently rocking the containment unit, but it did little to help. In fact, it seemed to make the creature a bit motion sick. Tiria would know what to do. Suddenly, he looked at the creature with a different mindset. Someone was missing it, at least he hoped this was what all the commotion had been about. Someone would have the little guy...girl...whatever in their arms tonight and be able to bond with them in a way Sig had been denied with his own boys. "It's going to be okay," he said quietly.
If only that were true. Sig watched the creature settle down and curl up in the corner of the container that was closest to Sig's own heart. Could it hear it beating? A fragile heart, battered by time and sadness, replaced with one grown specifically for him. Just muscle and fibers and vessels. A lot was piled onto the notion of the heart. Perhaps the very fragility of it reminded one of the tenuous nature of relationships, love, and hope.
Taking a deep breath, Sig looked around for Jenison. Perhaps the lack of coffee was making him melancholy. "Not long now, little one," he said to the creature who was now snoozing soundly in a container held in the arms of an alien. The new lifeform solidified a resolve in the man. He had, for the past year or so, been merely existing. Work was a salve to cover up the wounds, but it did little to heal. It was time to start living again. For himself.
Hearing the doors open, he smiled as Jenison approached.
"Incoming ship," one of the shuttlebay officers called out. Sig waited for Alyssa's cue and stepped forward to meet the aliens.
Tag Lt. Commander Alyssa Jenison
(This takes place after the other shuttle has returned back to the ship)
