"Sir, I'm detecting chroniton particles?"
"Fantastic," Tyne grumbled. "Verification?" He wasn't about to take action if the green-behind-the-ears Ensign was reading it incorrectly.
“They are chronitons. I recognize that configuration. I recommend we go to yellow alert.”
"Alert only," Tyne cautioned. "Raising shields could send the wrong message."
"Sir, we are being hailed."
"On screen," Tyne said quickly. Now was when they would find out if the Klingons were going to play by the rules.
"This is General Gor'tahk of the 'uD'a'. We expected the Talon. Explain."
Wonderful. "The Talon has been delayed. We have been authorized to act in its place. I am Captain Donovan Tyne."
Gor'tahk looked less than pleased about the news, but a memory caused a smirk to form on his face. "Tyne? I have heard stories about the mother of your child. M'Khol found her...useful, or so I hear."
It was a tactic to enrage, but Tyne was not falling for it, though he wanted to rip the Klingon's head from his body with his bare hands. As hurt as he had been by Chloe's departure from his life, he still loved her and cherished the moments they had shared alone and abandoned on that planet. "As did I," he replied instead. It was cryptic and would leave the Klingon wondering as to the meaning. "Let's not sully this momentous occasion with such talk," he suggested.
Gor'tahk nodded. "You will follow us to Qo'noS where the Sword of Kahless will be placed in the Great Hall." Behind him, in full view, were several of his officers, who straightened up visibly at the mention of their mission. The only one who failed to do so was Kinin, who remained completely still during the proceedings, her eyes staring straight into the imaging device.
Tyne blinked. "I was under the assumption that-"
"You assumed incorrectly."
"I will have to clear this with Starfleet."
Gor'tahk shrugged. "I will be waiting."
The transmission ended and Tyne stood motionless, frozen by the thought of taking a Defiant class starship into Klingon territory. Not just Klingon territory, but to the very heart of the Empire. "Get me Starfleet Command," he said. "Widen your scans of the area, see if there are other ships."
