"Stop!"
A fraction of a second earlier, and maybe... maybe his warning would have been issued in time. Yolanda watched as the phaser beam arced across the distance and struck her target. However, both Tegan and her assailant fail to the ground. The side scowl that Roman issued her as he moved past her hadn't gone unnoticed. Yolanda moved after him, her phaser still in hand. She stood a few meters back, watching as he pushed the man away from Tegan with this foot.
As he did a brief inspection of the scene, Roman seemed surprised to find that Tegan's assailant was a Starfleet officer. He quickly moved aside as Doctor Osler-Drew rushed to Tegan's side. Of course, as if things couldn't get any worse, the red hue that surrounded them gave way to a blue. "You've got to be kidding me," Vargas said. She quickly placed her phaser in its holster and withdrew her tricorder. She promptly tried to ascertain the cause for the Blue Alert.
"No one goes anywhere alone. If you're concentrating on repairs, someone has to have your back. We can't afford to-"
"Agreed," Vargas said promptly. Her eyes were glued to the screen until she looked up and down the distant corridor from which the noise came. No one should be moving alone. Certainly not after they were attacked. Though, she too had heard the moans from afar. What the hell was going on on this station.
"We really should call for backup."
"I couldn't agree more, Commander," Vargas said. And she was hoping that would be a task they could complete without complications. Her eyes then turned towards Osler-Drew. "Bernard?" she asked, inquiring about Tegan's status because staying put was appearing to look less and less like a viable option.
"If she fails to wake soon, then we must get back to the Nightingale."
"I'll take it under advisement, Doctor," she replied. After all, they did still have a mission to complete. And if there were others on the station in danger of being attacked by... whatever these things were... they couldn't just leave.
"Look, his blood is the same as the casualties down the corridor. My readings coupled with the reports confirm a viral infection which is the only conclusive fact I have. It could be an airborne germ transmission, or it could be transmitted through physical contact."
Yolanda sighed. That was far from good news. Her eyes fell upon Tegan. Did that mean that she had been infected. Or for that matter, were they all infected? Vargas reached up and tapped her comm badge. "Vargas to Nightingale. Record and relay the following message to the U.S.S. Talon as a Priority One Distress Call." She paused and waited for the acknowledging chime. "This is Lt. Commander Vargas. We have reached our destination and found the station in disarray. Already a member of my team has been attacked and injured. The station is also under Blue Alert because of a possible unknown contagion. We request immediate assistance. Vargas out." Content as she could be with the message, she closed the channel, hoping that the message would not fall upon deaf ears.
"We need find a way to separate the readings of infected crew members."
"That's it," Yolanda said looking at Bernard. "If it's an actual infection, the body would be fighting the virus, correct? And that typically means a fever." Yolanda assumed it was worth a try. "Perhaps we can calibrate our instruments to search for elevated body temperatures." She looked down at Tegan's assailant. "We should be able to come up with an idea of what body temperature to scan for from him." Who knew? At the very least, they could possibly determine if either of them had been affected.
"It appears your job has increased in difficulty, Commander. I suspect we are vastly outnumbered."
"I'm okay. I'm okay. Why are we sitting next to him?"
"Take it easy, Tegan," Yolanda said. "Everything's going to be fine. He's not going to hurt you." At least, that was what Yolanda hoped. Her eyes glanced in Roman's direction to make sure that he was ready... just in case.
"Blue alert? Did you guys do that? How long was I out?"
"Not long," Vargas explained. "As for the Blue Alert, we're trying to get to the bottom of that, but it appears that some of the stations crew have been infected by some sort of virus." Yolanda took a deep breath. "And, it's possible that you may have been as well. I don't want you to panic, but I need you to keep your distance just for the time being. Okay?" It was so tempting to reach out to the young girl, knowing she was likely terrified. Yolanda looked over at Bernard, hoping that her suggestion had some merit, and that it would lead to some good news for Tegan. "Bernard?"
