He was having a hard time telling whether it was the fire reflecting on her cheeks or if she were blushing, but he liked to think it was the latter. It was refreshing to see a security officer who could still be turned crimson.
"Sounds like you've put more thought into it than I have. He'd have to survive the scrutiny of four brothers otherwise there just ain't no point in tryin' which means he'd have to be honest, strong, intelligent, and kind."
At the mention of her brothers, Victor became somber. Gideon had been subjected to so much and Micah had been sent home because of it, missing out on part of his Academy training. He wondered if any of them would ever fully support Eden getting together with someone from Starfleet after that.
"Confidence and modesty in equal measure would be nice I reckon... someone who could teach me stuff, and they gotta like dogs and kids."
"Kids?" Yeah, most people wanted those, he had to remind himself.
"But if it were as easy as checkin' off a list like that then I'd probably be Mrs. Kol with a baby or two hangin' off my hip. Maybe in another life but I like this one better."
"Glad you're here," he said as he watched the firelight dance in her eyes. "I suppose, though, everyone has to make some concessions when it comes to relationships, otherwise none of us would get together. I don't think there is that perfect someone. Not really." He kicked off his shoes and socks and began to dig his toes into the still-warm golden sand. "'course, the more someone gets burned, the less likely they are to believe in perfection. You start setting rules."
His foot suddenly jutted out of the sand, intentionally sprinkling Eden's lower legs with the sparkling granules. "What about you? What are the deal breakers?"
