Tek proved just as easily goaded as S'rah, and Keith's jaw clenched as he listened to the Bajoran's emphatic explanation that Bajorans were absolutely nothing like a species he'd never even met, wondering if it was really such an important distinction.
"We prefer peace, but we are trained to fight in the need arises," he replied, trying to stay safely in some kind of middle ground since "pacifism" didn't seem to be something the Pelegians valued too highly. There was a delicate balance between being perceived as a threat, and being prey. Keith didn't want to be either.
Nor did Keith want to answer their question. What if he said the wrong thing and it got all of them killed. At least he wouldn't have to live with the guilt for very long, he supposed that was some comfort. He just wanted to sit back down in his chair and disappear, but that wouldn't be very Starfleet of him.
"Vulcans, Tellarites, Andorians," he said, listing them slowly, wondering how many names he should say before they would be satisfied. The more he listed, the stronger their Federation would appear, but he it also risked mentioning a species with which the Pelegians had bad blood. "Caitians, Bolians, just to name a few," he said, standing there nervously as he waited for judgement. Maybe if they were lucky, all of those species would be unknown to them, like Humans. Perhaps the only reason why they knew about Bajorans and Cardassians was their physical proximity to the wormhole.
"I like the emergency ration protein number four," he suggested to the Pelegians when they mentioned getting something to eat. "It tastes kind of like saltfish," he said, though he doubted that meant anything to them, since they probably had never had Caribbean food.
