The Talon runs on a 3 shift schedule in theory, with each member of the crew serving 8 hour shifts. That said, it would be EXTREMELY awkward and frustrating to only be able to RP your character on duty during specific hours. If you want your character to be involved in an active plot, put them in there. You don't have to wait until your shift. It would be completely plausible for your character to have switched shifts with someone, or, during an alert, to come lend a hand. Don't stress about shifts. Shifts work fine in the real world, but really suck in the RP world. Enough said, I hope.

Executive Staff

Commodore: Commodores command groups of ships, as opposed to captains commanding single ships or units, or they may be used in sensitive Federation matters, overseeing a particular tenuous situation. They are also known as "Rear admiral-lower half."

Captain: Captains of starships, often located hundreds of light years away from and out of communications with higher authority, must be able to function autonomously and make independent command decisions affecting Federation policy and countless lives. Accordingly, few Starfleet officers ever gain the captaincy of a starship, the result of decades of sustained excellence as a Starfleet leader.

First Officer: (abbreviated XO) Aboard a starship the first officer was the second-in-command, just below the captain. On a Federation starship, the first officer is the principal adviser to the captain, the implementer of the captain's orders, prepares and issues duty rosters, commands the vessel in the event of the captain's absence, incapacitation or death, and works with the chief medical officer or counselor on crew evaluations. They often lead away missions.

Second Officer: A second officer assumes command of the ship when both the captain and first officer are unavailable. It is common for a second officer to be a department head aboard the ship first, and a second officer second. He or she was rarely involved in the day to day command of the starship or starbase the way the captain or first officer is.

Third Officer: A third officer is fourth in line of command of the vessel after the captain. As with the Second Officer, the Third Officer usually serves as a department head first, and as a third officer second.
Helm

Chief of Flight Operations: The senior helmsman. The CFO serves as the pilot of the Captain's yacht.

Helmsman: Controls helm and navigation, as well as piloting shuttlecraft as needed. During red alert situations, there will be an officer on both bridges (main and battle bridge), as well as on the shuttlecraft. Skilled pilots may also possess the aptitude for flying hover-crafts, single-person jet packs, etc. Although some individuals may be proficient with the inner workings of mechanical spacecraft, this does not necesarrily mean that they can repair all system failures without the help from an Engineer.
Engineering

Chief Engineer: On starships or starbases, the chief engineering officer (often shortened to chief engineer) is in charge of all engineers and engineering duties. The chief engineer's duties range from making the duty shift roster for engineering personnel to advising the captain on possible solutions for certain technical problems. In general the chief engineer is an officer with enough experience in his or her own field of expertise and with seniority over the rest of the engineers. A chief engineer is also a member of the senior staff and accountable for the overall performance of the vessel.

Engineering officer: On any space starship, engineers are officers assigned to monitor and maintain the starship's functionality. They often do most of the "grunt work" that is involved in keeping a ship or space station up and running. Engineering officers are generally assigned tasks that include maintaining and/or improving the performance of the warp drive, ship's database, computer processors and circuitry, holographic emitters, tractor beams, transporter components, observational equipment (such as sensors, probes, and satellites), weaponry systems, deflector array, hull plating, life support, shields and alternative defense systems, and many other crucial parts of a ship's anatomy. They are expected to tackle all the problems that drain the ship's resources or lower its efficiency. Tests are done regularly through main engineering, which is the hub of activity for the entire department. From main engineering, all ship functions can be monitored and checked for any abnormalities.

Star Stream Analyst: This engineering officer would have both an engineering and a science background. Their job is to research the newly discovered star streams.

Warp Core Specialist: An engineering officer who is responsible for the maintenance of the warp core, as well as researching ways to increase efficiency.

Replicator Engineer: An engineering officer whose main duties is to see to replicator repairs, programming, waste reclamation, etc.

Transporter Operations: More than just a transporter operator, this engineer sees to the research of better transporter technology, advises the senior staff about bulk transports of crew, analyzes current technology and determines if it is safe for newly discovered aliens.

Research and Development Engineer: This engineer is on the cutting edge of technology, always looking to make things better and more efficient. He/she should NOT, however, develop any new technology without first getting admin approval. We don't want to veer too far away from canon.
Security/Tactical

Security Chief: The security chief (or chief of security) is the officer in charge of the security division of a starship or starbase. Security officer continuing education and training is part of the duties of this officer, as is assigning crew rotations and division of duties.

Intelligence Officer: This is a security officer who gathers intel from the Federation and other sources and disseminates it to the others on the station. The officer will have a very high security clearance so he/she can get those intel reports and read them. Aside from their superiors, or those on a need-to-know basis, they will not be able to tell anyone else what they know. They are not undercover officers. Rather, the officers on the ship/station will know they carry the title of Intelligence Officer. They may get, from time to time, assignments which will take them into the undercover realm. Those will come from the admin staff and should not be created on your own without approval by the admin.

Security officer: A security officer's duties include the protection of Starfleet and Federation assets, the prevention and investigation of crimes, and personal protection of Starfleet officers and Federation or foreign dignitaries. It is customary for landing parties to include a number of security officers as guards. Secures and controls weapons and ammunition in security areas. Schedules and performs preventive and organizational maintenance on weapons.

Tactical officer: The Tactical Officer is an officer stationed at the console that controls a ship's weaponry and shields. On Starfleet vessels, the tactical officers job is to maintain weapon and shield readiness along with executing firing solutions. These solutions can range from a low intensity phaser beam or to plot a torpedo firing pattern. These duties are sometimes handled by a security officer if there is no tactical officer available on the bridge.
Operations

Chief of Operations: The chief of operations or operations chief was the head of the operations division and often worked out of the operations center or hand-in-hand with the engineering department. It is a senior staff position and it is appropriate to use the title in place of one's rank. The Chief is in charge of Environmental Systems, Communications, Computer operations, Logistics, Civilian staff, and all Ancillary operations personnel.

Operations officers: As well as manning the ops station (as such, overseeing internal systems control, communications and sensor system usages), ops personnel also coordinate the scheduling of resources, hardware and system usage for an entire starship.

Communications Officer and Linguist: An ops officer who has a degree in linguistics as well as communications. This officer is responsible for the Universal Translator, helping to decipher coded messages, communicating with aliens whose language is not in our database, and establishing contact with ships/stations as we encounter them. They also continually scan for transmissions, hoping to find new lifeforms or detecting distress beacons.

Computer Core Specialist: An officer in charge of maintaining the integrity of the ship's computer databases and systems. They are also in charge of PADD repair. Works closely with the Information Systems Specialist.

Information Systems Specialist: This is an ops officer whose job it is to constantly update and categorize the data in the ship's computers. Works closely with the Computer Core Specialist.

Chief of Logistics: As chief logistics officer, you will lead and manage all logistics support. Specific activities will include developing, preparing and implementing logistics-support plans, including forecasting, supply schedules and operational issues that may arise during the transfer of goods and services. You will serve as the principal liaison between the ship/station and suppliers and implement strategy and tools to ensure the coordination of materials and goods follows a streamlined process that is as error-free as possible. Finally, you will advise senior management on staffing levels and inventory, suggesting changes that may be needed to meet the requirements of the established logistics strategy. You will also be responsible for crew quarters assignments and arranging for large group housing should the need arise.

Supply Chief (Quartermaster): Inspects completed work for accuracy and compliance with established procedures. Coordinates supply activities. Reviews and annotates changes to unit material condition status report.

Supply Assistant: Receives, inspects, inventories, loads, unloads, segregates, stores, issues, delivers and turns-in organization and installation supplies and equipment. Prepares all unit/organizational supply documents.

Stewards: A person who looks after the crew and guests, seeing to their needs. Would have the rank of crewman.

Janitor: Perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, cleaning executive fish tanks, and removing rubbish. Duties may include performing routine maintenance activities and notifying management of need for repairs.

Head Chef: In charge of daily menus for the buffet in the mess hall as well as providing food for staff meetings, dignitary functions, parties, etc. Supervises the culinary staff. Educates and instructs the crew about better nutrition.

Sous Chef: Assistant to the head chef. The Sous Chef is there to make the Chef look good. They do the grunge work; they learn their trade and refine their skills. They assure the establishment is sending out the best quality food they can.
Medical

Doctor: A Doctor of Medicine, abbreviated MD, is a Federation title to an accredited medical physician. A physician practices in the field of medical science. It is a physician's duty to save the lives of ailing patients, while at the same time preserve the life of healthy patients. It is also a requirement of a medical practitioner to have a certain sensitivity to properly address a patient.

Medic: A medic is an individual trained in medicine who administers medical first aid where needed and to assist the doctors and nurses as required.

Nurse: A nurse is a healthcare professional who, in collaboration with other members of a health care team, is responsible for: treatment, safety, and recovery of acutely or chronically ill individuals; health promotion and maintenance within families, communities and populations; and, treatment of life-threatening emergencies in a wide range of health care settings. Nurses perform a wide range of clinical and non-clinical functions necessary to the delivery of health care, and may also be involved in medical and nursing research.

Counselor: A counselor is an individual trained in psychology/Psychiatry and is responsible for the mental well-being of the crew and civilian staff. The ship's counselor also has a diplomatic role, advising the captain in first contact and other situations. As with the chief medical officer, the ship's counselor has the power to relieve other officers and crewmembers of duty if he or she feels that their patient is suffering from a condition that may hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively.
Science

Chief Science Officer: This Chief is the individual responsible for overseeing scientific investigations and for providing the ship's Captain with scientific information needed for command decisions. The science officer's station on the Bridge of most Federation starships included extensive tie-ins to the various Sensor systems, as well as links to the ships library computer system.

Science officers: science officers are responsible for observations, research, and experiments in any of the sciences, including mathematics, statistics, physics (physical and temporal), chemistry, botany, zoology, geology, cosmology, and others. The department has some overlap with the medical department in terms of microbiology, xenobiology, and life sciences.
Ancillary Services

Ancillary Operations Manager: Oversees the Ancillary crew and assures the smooth running of the staff.

Waiter: Works in the mess hall and is responsible for clearing tables and keeping the facility clean. Will act as servers at dignitary functions.

Lounge Host: Serves drinks at the bar and keeps customers happy.

Civilian Liaison: Serves as an intermediary between civilians and officers.

Historian: Documents the daily lives of crew and missions.

Teacher: Instructs the children who live on the ship/station.
