Zak had managed to secure quarters for Ahska with no problem at all. Though she had wanted to talk to him, she shooed him away, her own customs dictating that she not be alone in a room with him. She knew eventually she would have to let go of her ways if she were to fit in with this crew.
Sitting in a small alcove in the bustling lab, she took a sip of her tea as she read more about Klingons. She had decided to start her studies with them, thinking it would help her get over her fear of Kinin. Unfortunately, it was having the opposite effect. They were a brutal species and their history was filled with bloodshed, all in the name of honor. Ashka didn't understand that logic. The Klingons seemed very much like the people who were attacking her planet. She shivered.
"Someone walk over your grave?"
She looked behind her and one of the lab techs was standing there, watching her. "That's a horrible thing to ask," she said as she turned in her chair to face him.
"It's true," he said. "When humans shiver like that, it is said that someone has just walked over your grave."
She didn't know if he was teasing her or being serious.
"You know you could do your research in your quarters," he offered. "Then you won't have to put up with human eccentricities."
"If I'm in the way, I can go," she said.
"No, no..." he smiled, pulling up a chair next to hers, "I didn't mean it that way. Sorry. What are you working on?"
"Klingons. I'm not sure I like reading about all they've done."
"Remember," he said gently, "every species has their share of bloodshed, political turmoil, and social upheaval. It's how they learn and grow. I'm sure even your people have had a violent past."
Ahska's expression flew quickly to rage, "we only mean to protect ourselves! The Mehtak would kill us all if we didn't!"
The tech held up his hands, palms facing her, "whoa... Okay... maybe this isn't the best time to discuss this."
She looked at him for a second, then reached out, touching his forearm, "I'm sorry," she said, "I guess we all want to defend our people." She smiled at him, "even the Klingons, I suppose."
